Korean netizens believe that the music video of IU's "Above the Time was bluntly copied.
Recently, a Korean netizen learned about an Indonesian music video that has similar parts to that of IU's previous track "Above the Time, which is included in her seventh Korean-language extended play "Love Poem that was released on November 18, 2019.
On October 24, a netizen posted a set of screenshots of the two music videos to show the comparison. The netizen affirmed that the MV is not a parody but an official music video of a song entitled "Kasih Dengarkanlah Aku," which was launched by an Indonesian singer named Via Vallen.
Right after the post was made, the Korean online community claims that the Indonesian singer plagiarized the music video of IU's single. Based on the photos, different aspects of the Korean artist's MV were copied starting from the beginning. The plot of the two videos is very much alike, even the props, hairstyles, and outfits are almost identical.
The controversy has now spread internationally, and eventually reached the Indonesian singer and his agency. According to the label, the management and the artist only followed what the director instructed them to do. They stated, "As for the final result of the video clip, there are similarities to other video clips, we management do not know it at all. We are currently asking for clarification from the director."
The company continued, "The artists, in this case, Via Vallen and Dyrga Dadali, as the main actors in the video, only carry out their duties as talents whose activities are guided by the director. The two artists did not participate in determining the concept of the clip."
Right after hearing the news, not only fans from Korea gave various opinions and responses, but also those from Indonesia and other countries. Fans of IU also called Uaena, have flooded comments on the music video of the Indonesian singer. Some of the comments are written below:
"Taking inspiration from other artists' works is okay but directly copying it is just plain disrespectful towards the artist herself and the whole team who worked so hard for it."
"Take this down, it's clearly seen that this is the copied version of IU's 'Above the Time.' It's not appropriate to use someone's idea."
"This is not cool at all, at least give proper credits that this was inspired by IU's MV because IU and her team worked hard for it."
"This MV is obviously copied from IU's 'Above the Time.' This is stealing. You are disrespecting and plagiarizing another director's work."
"How did you have the courage to copy IU's music video just like that?"
The female artist and her agency, EDAM Entertainment, has not yet responded to the controversy.
Meanwhile, IU's latest release is her single "Eight, which features BTS's Suga, who also produced the track. It is part of the idol's 'coming-of-age' series, which started in 2015 with "Twenty-three and followed by "Palette in 2017. "Eight is said to be derived from the last number of the Korean age of IU and Suga - 'twenty-eight.'
