Genie Music has revealed the winners under some categories for this year's Genie Music Awards!
Genie Music Awards is one of the major music awards shows that is being held in South Korea every year to recognize K-Pop artists and groups and their released works. It is organized by Genie Music, a South Korean agency that deals with the production and distribution of music content, along with its partner network.
To be eligible for the 2020 Genie Music Awards, music must have been launched from Jan. 1 of this year to Nov. 15. Like before, winners for different categories will be determined through judging criteria that include online voting, digital sales, judge's scores, and social media. The percentages of the criteria vary per category.
This year, BTS is again one of the winners. The band received one of the grand prizes or "Daesang," specifically the "Album of the Year" with their fourth studio album "Map of the Soul: 7," which was released on Feb. 21. This is the second time that the boy group has won the title - the first one was in 2018 with the third album "Love Yourself: Answer." Additionally, this is the fifth time that BTS has earned a grand prize at Genie Music Awards, and their 13th award overall.
BTS also took home the "Best Dance Track" award at the 2020 Genie Music Awards with their hit single "Dynamite." This is the band's very first song recorded in English. Described as a disco-pop song, "Dynamite" is about appreciating even the little things that make life valuable. It was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.
South Korean rapper Zico also got a grand prize, particularly the "Song of the Year" with the track "Any Song," which was launched on Jan. 13. This song topped all Korean real-time digital charts following its release. It also became popular on the video-sharing application TikTok with the hashtag "Any Song Challenge." Moreover, the single was certified platinum by the Gaon Music Chart for the streaming category and was considered the most-streamed in Korea for the first half of 2020.
Other than that, Zico won the "Best Rap/Hip Hop Track" award also with "Any Song."
Meanwhile, Lee Hi has taken home the "Best R&B/Soul Track" with her digital single "Holo," which was released on July 23. The song carries a comforting message to help people overcome a period of solitude.
The "Best Ballad Track" goes to MC the MAX's "Like the First Time" that was launched this past March.
Actor Jo Jung Suk also earned an award for this year's Genie Music Awards - the "Best OST" with "Aloha," which is the remake of the 2001 track of the same name that was originally sung by the trio Cool. It is the soundtrack for tvN's "Hospital Playlist," where he is also the lead star.
Lastly, Lim Youngwoong, who is the final winner of the reality TV show "Mr. Trot," received the "Best Trot" award with "Trust in Me" that was released on April 3.
Genie Music is yet to announce the winner of the "Singer of the Year" award as the online voting is still on-going. Lim Youngwoong is currently in the lead, followed by Kim Hojoong, and BTS.
