Stray Kids and ATEEZ Confirmed to Join The Boyz as Contestants on Mnet's 'Kingdom'

K-Pop boy groups Stray Kids and ATEEZ are confirmed to appear as competing groups on Mnet's "Kingdom" with The Boyz, the winner of Mnet's "Road to Kingdom."

On Dec. 6, the three Korean acts teased their upcoming appearances on the reality competition show "Kingdom" by teaming up for a special collaboration stage at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). The three boy bands first performed a solo stage one after another. Then, Stray Kids's Hyunjin, ATEEZ's San, and The Boyz's Juyeon all took the stage together, dancing around a glistening crown as if fighting for the throne.

In the video following the group's performance, Mnet teased that "Kingdom" - a much-anticipated second season of "Queendom" - will be airing soon.

After the great success of its idol competition "Queendom" in 2019, Mnet revealed that they would be producing a male version of the program called "Kingdom." But unlike "Queendom," the male rendition of the show was divided into two parts. Mnet first launched a preliminary season titled "Road to Kingdom," which took place from April to June of this year with seven boy groups competing for a spot in the final lineup of "Kingdom." In the final round, The Boyz was announced as the winner of the show.

"Kingdom" is the follow-up program to "Road to Kingdom" and it is set to broadcast sometime in the first half of 2021. News outlets previously reported that Mnet is preparing to start recording early next year. In addition, a source from the program revealed last October that they were casting artists with the goal of premiering "Kingdom" in February.

The competing groups in "Road to Kingdom," apart from The Boyz, were PENTAGON, Golden Child, VERIVERY, ONF, TOO, and ONEUS. Similar to "Queendom," the reality competition show involved releasing comeback singles, which must be newly-produced songs, and eliminations that left only five boy bands which will move on to the final round where they would perform their last comeback stages.

This year, Stray Kids, ATEEZ, and The Boyz released new music. Stray Kids launched its very first studio album titled "Go Live" that consists of 14 songs including the title track "God's Menu," released singles "On Track" and "Gone Days," and the Korean versions of "Slump" and Top." The band also released the repackaged album of the studio album called "In Life" on Sept. 14.

Last July 29, ATEEZ dropped its fifth extended play "Zero: Fever Part 1" which features seven songs including the two title tracks "Inception" and "Thanxx." After selling more than 340,000 physical copies in South Korea, the EP has become the group's first album to attain a platinum certification on the Gaon Albums Chart.
