Albums of BLACKPINK and BTS have been included in Billboard's "Top 50 Best Albums" for this year, and they are the only K-Pop groups on the list.
On Dec. 7, Billboard released the list of its "Top 50 Best Albums of 2020," containing works of artists from different countries and under different genres. Billboard described these releases as something that has helped people get to December, considering that this year was full of disasters and problems.
Billboard ranked BTS's seventh studio album "Map of the Soul: 7" in No. 33. Released on Feb. 21, the album marked the boy group's most historic year yet. The 20-song album soared to the top of the Billboard 200, becoming the first two chart-toppers of BTS this year; the second one is "BE."
"Map of the Soul: 7" is influenced by the group's growth and journey in the past seven years since their debut. Described as a pop, hip-hop, and R&B record, the work is the very first Korean album to spend two weeks in Top 3 in the official album charts in the United Kingdom and Germany, as well as the first Asian album to be No. 1 on all the charts of the world's five biggest music markets: Japan, France, Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
On top of that, "Map of the Soul: 7" has received a Guinness World Records title. It earned the title of "best-selling album (South Korea)," taking over their own record with "Map of the Soul: Persona." According to Guinness World Records, the album sold a total of 4,265,617 copies in June of this year.
Apart from BTS, BLACKPINK's work was also included in Billboard's "Top 50 Best Albums of 2020." The girl group's first studio album "The Album" claimed the No. 25 spot on the list. Billboard evaluated that the album's name "The Album" is well suitable for the work and that it contains eight "grade-A" K-Pop songs. They also mentioned the high-profile collaborations of the girl group with American superstars Selena Gomez ("Ice Cream") and Cardi B ("Bet You Wanna").
In addition, Billboard said that BLACKPINK's album saying that it provides the perfect entry points for soon-to-be BLINKs (BLACKPINK's fan club). They also said that the female act is indeed the revolution.
Following its release on Oct. 2, "The Album" skyrocketed to the top of the iTunes Top Albums charts in 57 countries across the globe. It also peaked at No. 2 on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Official Charts' albums chart, setting a new record for Korean girls groups on both charts.
BLACKPINK became the first-ever Korean "million-seller" female group with "The Album." Last October, YG Entertainment revealed that a total of 1,209,543 copies of the album had been sold. The figure is a combination of around 871, 355 copies, and 319,300 copies sold in Europe and the United States. Not to mention, all 18,888 copies of the album's limited edition vinyl LP version were sold out upon its launch.
