Who are the "Girl Group of the Year" and Boy Group of the Year"? BLACKPINK, BTS, EXO, TWICE, and many more topped the rankings!
This 2020, the world's most beloved K-pop singer is the global group, BTS.
According to the year-end survey, which was conducted by KBS World Radio, none other than BTS ranked first in the "Singer of the Year" category. This proves how massive their popularity is, which is continuously rising as they venture into the global market, particularly in the US.
BTS and BLACKPINK Top "Boy and Girl Group of the Year": Who's on the List?
In particular, KBS World Radio held its annual survey which marks its fifth anniversary this year, and was able to gather a total of 387,593 respondents coming from 185 countries around the world to participate in the online voting.
Among the respondents, 21.5% selected BTS as the representative "K-pop singer of the year."
In addition, BTS ranked No. 1 in "Boy Group of the Year" (30.3%) and similarly, their global hit song "Dynamite" also ranked No. 1 (36.5%) in the "Song of the Year" category, proving that 2020 is indeed BTS's Year.
Moreover, the group's English song, "Dynamite" showcased an amazing record upon its release, which also skyrocketed and ranked No.1 at Billboard's "Hot 100."
Stray Kids, EXO, and NCT 127 were also ranked high for the category as well, an evidence that they were steadily loved by global fans.
As for the "Girl Group of the Year," BLACKPINK topped the list with 29.5 percent votes. The quartet also ranked No. 2 for the category of "Singer of the Year," and ranked second place as well for "Song of the Year" with their pre-release track, "How You Like That?"
This track is their first released track on this year following their long hiatus, and prior to the release of the group's first full-length album, " THE ALBUM."
Their achievements confirmed that they are the " biggest girl group in the world," and is also a key player along "Princes of Pop" BTS.
TWICE, MAMAMOO, and Red Velvet also entered the rankings for the girl group category, who are all known as prominent K-pop female acts along with BLACKPINK.
Meanwhile, TREASURE topped the list with 35.5 percent of the vote as the "Rookie of the year" who showed remarkable activities in 2020.
This year's survey showed that more respondents from various nationalities and cultures around the world, including India, the U.S., Mexico, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile, especially in Southeast Asia, such as Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, are feeling the popularity of K-pop, which is truly loved despite the pandemic.
Kim Yoon Ha, a pop music critic, said, "Various non-contact attempts due to coronavirus are likely to continue in the K-pop scene for the time being next year, and as discussions on next-generation K-pop groups that will lead a new generation after BTS are expected to have fierce competition among talented K-pop groups on their own."
KBS World Radio Survey Winners Will be Announced at "2020 KBS Song Festival"
The survey was conducted by KBS World Radio from November 27 to December 7 through its website and mobile app, and the survey was conducted in a total of five categories including "Singer of the Year," "Song of the Year," "Rookie of the Year," "Boy Group of the Year," and Girl Group of the Year." Candidates were selected based on the KBS Music Bank Top 10 chart in 2020.
Detailed survey results can be found on the KBS World Radio website, and will also be introduced at the "2020 KBS Song Festival," which will be broadcast live on the KBS World YouTube channel from 7 p.m. on Dec. 18.
On December 26, KBS World Radio will be broadcast worldwide as a year-end special "K-Pop Loved by the World," which will be produced in 10 foreign languages.
