Following BTOB member Jung Ilhoon's recent marijuana scandal, the idol's reason for bleaching his hair is now seen in a new light. Keep on reading to learn more.
Back in 2019, Jung Ilhon appeared on the Mnet show "TMI News," where he revealed that he had dyed his hair blond for his sister's wedding. When he revealed why he dyed his hair, the other guests on the show asked, "Why did you not just dye it black so it would look more formal?"
After being questioned with comments claiming that black hair would have suited the event more, Jung Ilhoon replied, "An idol member must always be prepped and be ready for anything."
At the time, it appeared to be a stylistic choice, but it is now being seen in a new light. Dyeing, bleaching, and shaving hair are some of the most common ways to avoid being caught doing drugs. As drug tests often involve hair testing, bleaching and dyeing can dilute the remaining concentration of drug components or particles in the hair. However, doing this is not foolproof - there is still a chance you can detect doing drugs, especially with advanced drug detection methods.
Last year, singer Park Yoochun was arrested on drug administration charges. He previously made headlines for bleaching and dying his hair several times to avoid being detected during his drug tests. The singer was also suspected of removing hair from all over his body while dyeing his hair. However, Park Yoochun was ultimately caught after traces of methamphetamine were found in one of his leg hairs.
Because of this, people are currently speculating that Jung Ilhoon had chosen to dye and bleach his hair blonde to avoid being caught off his drug usage. People believe that this was when he was smoking often, as reports had stated he smoked marijuana as recently as last year.
On Monday, Dec. 21, it was reported that Jung Ilhoon is being investigated for the purchase and habitual use of cannabis, also known as marijuana. The idol was reported to have been using it as early as 2016 and as recent as 2019. It was further revealed that Jung Ilhoon's case was sent to the prosecution earlier this year in July.
Traces of the drug were detected on Jung Ilhoon through hair samples, which were taken via a drug test. During the police investigation, Jung Ilhoon reportedly confessed to habitually smoking marijuana. The authorities first became aware of his usage of cannabis after they arrested a group of people for trading virtual currency for drugs last year. During the account taking process, one of the people apprehended confessed that Jung Ilhoon had purchased drugs for a chance of a reduced sentence.
Later reports revealed that Jung Ilhoon had gotten his hands on marijuana by depositing cash to an acquaintance's borrowed-name bank account. The acquaintance would convert the cash to virtual currency and would buy marijuana with it. He would then distribute the drug back to Jung Ilhoon. Throughout the 4-5 years that the idol has been smoking the drug, he has spent around ₩100,000,000 (approximately $90,952.09).
