On Tuesday, Dec. 22, The New York Post released their "The 5 Worst Songs of 2020" list to their website. To many people's surprise, the list included popular songs from BTS and BLACKPINK. Keep on reading to see the songs that were selected and why.
The publication noted that this whole year felt "out of tune," most likely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the economic anxiety, and the Presidential election in the United States, to name a few reasons. While most publications celebrated the songs that brought light to the year, that transported us to a place that was not our bedroom, and this publication instead highlighted the song that "hit all the wrong notes."
The BTS song that was selected is "Dis-ease", which comes from BTS's most recent studio album, "Be". "Dis-ease" addressed the current coronavirus crisis with an upbeat tune. The song sends a message of strength and is filled with puns talking about different forms of illnesses. The song uses brassy instruments, loud drums, laced horns, guitars, and almost jarring scratching noise.
The reason why it was selected as one of the worst songs of the year is because of the cheesiness of the puns. According to the New York Post, it was a "major disservice."
However, the publication does note that even in the pandemic, BTS rose to the top and had many reasons to celebrate the year. The group released their all-English single "Dynamite" in Aug., with the song debuting at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first time a South Korean act achieved a number one hit single in the United States.
They got their second number one hit with their BTS remix "Savage Love (Laxed - Siren Beat)" with Jason Derulo and Jaesh 685. In Nov., their single "Life Goes On" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first Korean language song to hit number one in the United States. This means that BTS had three consecutive number ones in just three months, making them the fastest band to do so since The Beatles in 1964.
The BLACKPINK song that was selected is "Bet You Wanna (feat. Cardi B)". This song is a b-side track included in the girl group's first full-length album, "THE ALBUM." The song was co-written by Cardi B and is her first time doing a verse with no curse words and keeping it completely PG. The song is an upbeat party song that talks about promising your significant other a good time until they are hooked. The song was praised as a club-ready bop and is minimal yet still hype.
However, The New York Post did not agree. The publication noted that BLACKPINK has worked with other powerhouses, such as Lady Gaga for "Sour Candy" and Selena Gomez for "Ice Cream." "Bet You Wanna," which comes in following the massive success of Cardi B's "WAP," was just "wack," according to them.
This year was still massively successful despite their criticism of "Bet You Wanna." The group dropped their album "THE ALBUM," with the main single "Lovesick Girls" back in Oct. "THE ALBUM" peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and the UK Album Chart, making the group the highest-charting K-pop girl group on the charts. The album also made them the first K-pop girl to become a million sellers, selling 1.2 million copies in less than a month.
The group also released their documentary with Netflix on Oct., titled "BLACKPINK: Light Up The Sky". The documentary covered the past four years of their career, from their debut in 2016 to now.
