NCT has proven its growth in the past years as its four sub-units continue to release songs and albums of different genres. And this year, the boy group has something new in store for the fans.
On Jan. 13, NCT's Mark, Jaemin, Jeno, Doyoung, Kun, and Sungchan sat down for an interview with Star News to talk about their 2020, what fans can expect this 2021, and more. At one point, the group was asked if there's an international stage that they would like to perform on this year. Doyoung shared that he dreams of being on stage at the Billboard or Grammys award ceremony.
At the end of the talk, Sungchan revealed what's one of the things coming up this year that fans can look forward to. He shared that a new NCT sub-unit will come out along with all of NCT's teams. This unit will be the first one after more than two years since the formation of WayV in December 2018 and will be the fifth unit overall.
Since December 2018, SM Entertainment has been teasing the future of NCT and its units with the company's A&R Producer Chris Lee sharing the possibilities of forming NCT Japan, NCT Thailand, NCT Hollywood, and NCT Africa. Given the recent addition of Japanese member Shotaro and member Sungchan who has been studying Japanese, many speculated that the new unit would be a Japanese group.
To date, SM Entertainment's boy band, NCT is made up of a total of 23 members, namely Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Taeyong, Ten, Mark, Yuta, WinWin, Haechan, Renjun, Jeno, Jaemin, Chenle, Jisung, Johnny, Jungwoo, Lucas, Kun, Xiaojun, Hendery, Yangyang, Shotaro, and Sungchan.
These members are divided into four sub-units, except Shotaro and Sungchan who were just added to the group in October 2020. These units are called NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV. NCT U, which is the first unit SM Entertainment introduced, is a group with no fixed members, which means any member from NCT can be part of it depending on who fits the concept of their upcoming release.
NCT U made its debut in April 2016 with six members: Ten, Taeyong, Mark, Taeil, Doyoung, and Jaehyun. In that month, NCT released the songs "The 7th Sense" and "Without You." The second sub-unit that was introduced was NCT 127. It currently has 10 members: Taeyong, Taeil, Johnny, Winwin, Doyoung, Mark, Jaehyun, Yuta, Jungwoo, and Haechan. It debuted in July 2016 with a single titled "Fire Truck" with only seven members, excluding Johnny, Doyoung, and Jungwoo.
NCT Dream came next and it consists of seven members: Mark, Jaemin, Renjun, Chenle, Jeno, Jisung, and Haechan. This sub-unit made its debut in August 2016 with the song "Chewing Gum." The latest NCT sub-unitunit formed by SM Entertainment is WayV, which comprises seven members as well, namely Kun, Lucas, Ten, Hendery, Winwin, Yangyang, and Xiaojun. Its debut was back in January 2019 with its first digital extended play titled "The Vision."
