BLACKPINK, TWICE, and More: Korean Media Outlet Names The Girl Groups They Expect to Succeed in 2021

Despite the difficult situation brought about by the coronavirus pandemic, the world's interest in K-pop continues to rise due to active idols and their activities. Now that the world is paying attention to the activities of idol groups and K-pop is now expanding past South Korea, Top Star has named five girl groups they expect to succeed in 2021.

The fifth girl group the mention is Oh My Girl (Hyojung, Mimi, YooA, Seunghee, Jiho, Binnie, and Arin). Oh My Girl is a seven-member girl group that debuted in 2015 with their self-titled mini-album. Throughout their career, they have released numerous hit songs, such as "Secret Garden," "Closer," "Nonstop," and "Dolphin."

In 2019, Oh My Girl proved their skills by appearing on Mnet's "Queendom". With their newfound popularity, the girl group released "Nonstop," which was released in April 2020. "Nonstop' hit number one on various music sites and won eight music show wins. The song ended up being named as the "2020 K-Pop song of the Year" by the renowned American publication, TIME Magazine.

The fourth girl group they mentioned is (G)I-DLE (MIyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua). (G)I-DLE is a six-member multinational girl group that debuted in 2018. In their career, they have released well-loved songs such as "LATATA," "LION," "Oh my god," and "DUMDI DUMDI."

Like Oh My Girl, (G)I-DLE gained recognition from the public for their appearance on Mnet's "Queendom" in 2019. (G)I-DLE is the first girl group on the list to make a comeback in 2021, releasing their fourth mini-album "I Burn" on Jan. 11, and are currently promoting the title track "HWAA."

The third girl they mentioned is IZ*ONE (Eunbi, Sakura, Hyewon, Yena, Chaeyeon, Chaewon, Minju, Nako, Hitomi, Yujin, and Wonyoung). IZ*ONE is a 12-member Korean-Japanese girl group that was formed through the Mnet survival show "Produce 48." The group has many representative songs, such as "La Vie en Rose," "Violate," and "The Secret Story of the Swan."

IZ*ONE made a comeback last December 2019 with the title track "Panorama." The group is expected to disbanding in April 2021, but it appears they could get contract extensions, as each member's representative agency and CJ ENM are in talks of discussing future activities.

The second girl group they mentioned is TWICE (Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu). TWICE is a nine-member girl group that debuted in 2015 through the survival show "SIXTEEN." The girl group is known as the new "Nation's Girl Group" due to their numerous accolades as popularity in South Korea. TWICE has released numerous hit songs such as "TT," "Cheer Up," "YES or YES," and "MORE & MORE."

While TWICE has had domestic popularity for years now, they are now rising in popularity overseas. On Jan. 2, their song "CRY FOR ME" topped the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

Sitting at number one on Top Star's list is BLACKPINK (Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa). BLACKPINK is a four-member girl group that debuted in 2016. The girl group has released numerous top songs that received lots of love from the public, such as "KILL THIS LOVE," "DDU-DU DDU-DU," "Playing With Fire," and "How You Like That."

BLACKPINK has a total of six music video with more than 600 million views, including "DDU-DU DDU-DU" with 1.4 billion views, and "KILL THIS LOVE" with 1.1 billion views, "BOOMBAYAH" with 1 billion views, "As If It's Your Last" with 900 million views, and "How You Like That" with 700 million views.

BLACKPINK is preparing to hold their first online concert called "THE SHOW" on Jan. 31.
