SM Entertainment Slammed for Greeting Super Junior Kangin Happy Birthday

SM Entertainment shared a birthday greeting for Super Junior member Kangin, and some people are not happy. Keep on reading to learn more.

On Jan. 17, Sunday, SM Entertainment greeted Super Junior's Kangin a happy birthday through the label's official Instagram and Twitter accounts. While the action is small, people immediately expressed their dissatisfaction with the label still housing Kangin and still making posts concerning the idol.

Many accused SM Entertainment of openly supporting a criminal and claim that the company must have given up on properly managing the images of their artists. Others openly revealed that they hated the agency, saying that it is a company filled with criminals. For some, they thought their eyes were playing tricks on them and were extremely disappointed when they realized SM Entertainment did, in fact, greet the artist. Meanwhile, several also mentioned that SM Entertainment let go of f(x) and accused the company of mistreating the members, but seem to have no problem taking care of Kangin.

Why are People so Upset with Kangin?

Throughout his career, Kangin has been involved in numerous criminal charges. His first one is dated Sept. 16, 2009, when he was arrested for his involvement in a fight between two men outside a bar in Seoul, South Korea. Eye-witness reports stated that two men entered a room where Kangin and his friends were in and started arguing intensely. Kangin left the bar but was followed by the two men, who instigated the fight.

The brawl was caught on CCTV and was reported to the police. The idol was soon brought into interrogation by police with four other suspects. Despite how one suspect claimed that Kangin assaulted him, CCTV footage shows that Kangin had reacted in self-defense. Once the case became public, Kangin was dropped from Andre Kim's fashion show, where he was slated to be the main model. His schedules were temporarily postponed.

His second case was on Oct. 15, 2009 at 3:00 a.m. KST. Kangin had collided with a parked taxi that had no one inside and fled the scene. He turned himself into the police five hours later and was reported to have a blood alcohol content of 0.082%. He failed to show up at the Seoul Gangnam Police Station at 2:00 p.m. that day and had to be called in the next day.

Both Kangin and SM Entertainment apologized for the accident and his activities were suspended until the end of the year.

On Jan. 13, 2021, Kangin was indicted on charges of drunk driving and hit-and-run and was filed 8 million KRW by the Seoul Central District Court.

His third case was on May 24, 2016, in which he was involved with another drunk hit-and-run incident. He turned himself in after a few hours and was found with a blood alcohol content of 0.05%. Prosecutors indicted him on DUI charged on July 7 and by Sept. 7, he was sentenced to pay a 7 million KRW fine. SM Entertainment canceled all his future activities to give him time to reflect on his actions.

Other than the web drama he starred in back in May 2019 titled "What Happen to Mirae?", he has not been active in the entertainment industry and has not promoted with Super Junior since 2016.
