(G)I-DLE's "HWAA"

On Jan. 11, the female Korean act officially made a comeback with the release of their new mini-album "I burn," together with a music video for the title track, "HWAA." Written and co-composed by member Soyeon, "HWAA" is a moombahton genre song that has a catchy hook and traditional Asian instrumentation. Its lyrics express the cold emotions felt after a breakup.

Moreover, "HWAA" pertains to a flower, and symbolizes spring and love. It uses two different Chinese characters with one meaning "flower" and the other "fire" - both are pronounced the same way in Korean. According to Soyeon, the reason she decided to put the two characters together is that the track "features a narrator who is in winter but will burn the cold away and bloom like a flower and bring spring to them."

Positive Reviews and Commercial Success of (G)I-DLE's "HWAA"

After the release of (G)I-DLE's "HWAA," the single received positive reviews from music critics. Benedetta Geddo of Teen Vogue praised the girl group for their "undeniable talent for grand-scale storytelling and visuals in both their songs and music videos." Heran Mamo from Billboard defined the song as something that "ignites one's inner-fire to avoid the cold feelings brought on by a breakup." Mike Wass of Idolator said that the single is "an instantly catchy banger."

Besides the rave reviews, the song was a commercial success in South Korea. Upon release, "HWAA" quickly topped two of the major online music charts in South Korea: Genie Music and Bugs. It also entered Melon's 24Hits Chart, claiming the No. 98 spot and later rising to No. 16. The track also becomes the third fourth-generation girl group song to take the top position on Melon's real-time chart, with the other two songs being IZ*ONE's "Fiesta" and "Secret Story of the Swan."

(G)I-DLE's latest title track went on to enter Gaon's Digital, Download, and Streaming charts. It also rose from No. 12 to No. 5 on the Billboard K-pop Hot 100. It even debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.
