DAY6 Young K, AB6IX Lee Daehwi, & More: Korean Media Outlet Names the Next Generation of Self-Produced Idols We Should Watch out for

In the world of K-pop, some groups release songs and albums which were made for them by other artists, but some teams create their own music, from writing lyrics to making choreography - and these are called self-producing idols. But, within those self-producing groups, there is that one member that truly excels not only in singing and dancing, but also in lyric-writing, composition, overall production, and concept planning.

On March 15, Xports News named the next generation of self-producing idols that people should pay more attention to, and they are all male singers from already-known boy groups or are just rookies.

Here are the 4 Self-Producing idols you must keep an eye on, according to a Korean media outlet.

DAY6 Young K

Young K is part of the South Korean rock band DAY6, which debuted in September 2015 under JYP Entertainment. Young K serves as the bassist, vocalist, and rapper within DAY6. What's more, he is one of the members who directly take part in writing the lyrics or composing songs for the band, as well as other K-pop artists, since his debut.

GOT7's "Beggin' on my Knees," UP10TION's "Stuck on You," Eric Nam's "Paradise," and Nakjoon's "Sleep Mode," are just a few of the tracks that DAY6 Young K worked on in the past. When it comes to DAY6's releases, Young K has already written singles from A to Z. Some of these are "All Alone," "Beautiful Feeling," "DANCE DANCE," "I Loved You," "My Day," "Rescue Me," "Time of Our Life," and "Zombie."

AB6IX Lee Daehwi

Lee Daewhi is the lead dancer, lead vocalist, and maknae (youngest) of AB6IX, a four-member boy group under Brand New Music. He is known for being a former member of WANNA ONE, alongside his bandmate Woojin.

AB6IX is recognized as one of the self-producing idols in the K-pop scene, since all members participate in the overall production of their music, from writing songs to making dance moves.

Among them, Lee Daewhi is active as the team's main producer. In fact, he has taken part in the creation of all of AB6IX's songs, from their debut single "Breathe" to "Blind for Love" and "Salute."

Daehwi has also written songs for other artists, including IZ*ONE's "Airplane," MXM's "More than Ever," and Park Ji Hoon's "O'Clock."

PENTAGON Hui

PENTAGON Hui is another self-producing idol that people should watch out for. Hui is the leader and main vocalist of Cube Entertainment's boy group. Since 2016, the male idol has been writing tracks for the band and other singers. A few of the singles he worked on for PENTAGON are "You Are," "Like This," "Runaway," "Shine," "Naughty Boy," "Dr. Bebe," and "Daisy."

"Daisy," in particular, is a meaningful song for not only Hui but for PENTAGON as the group won their first-ever music show win with this track. In addition, Hui is known as the lyricist and composer of WANNA ONE's "Energetic," Ong Seong Wu's "Heart Sign," Wei's "Twilight," Shinwa's "Don't Leave More," and many more.

WEi Jang Daehyeon

WEi is a new K-pop boy group that debuted in October 2020 with their first extended play "Identity: First Sight," which features the lead single "Twilight." One of the members is Jang Daehyeon, who is the leader and main rapper of the band. Although he just debuted, his potential was seen in WEi's debut song "Twilight," which surpassed five million views within a day - Daehyeon participated in lyrics of the track.

The self-producing idol also wrote "TIMELESS" and "Hug You," as well as composed and arranged "Fuze." Jang Daehyeon's growth was further seen in WEi's first comeback in February with the second EP "Identity: Challenge," in which he acted as the producer of the EP's lead single "All or Nothing."
