GOT7 Jay B Reveals His Thoughts after Leaving JYP Entertainment + What He Will Show as 'Jay B' and 'Def.'

GOT7's leader Jay B recently had a pictorial for the April 2021 issue of Arena Homme+ magazine. The "Encore" singer also sat down for an interview where he shared his thoughts after parting ways with JYP Entertainment, as well as what he will be showing as Jay B and Def.

GOT7 Jay B Discloses His Thoughts after Leaving JYP Entertainment

In an interview with Arena Homme+, Jay B talked about his departure from JYP Entertainment, where he was an artist for almost nine years and first debuted as half of the duo JJ Project with Jinyoung and re-debuted as a member of GOT7.

On Jan. 19, the seven-year exclusive contracts of GOT7 members with JYP Entertainment has officially ended. Although the artists will leave the company, Jay B, Jinyoung, Yugyeom, Mark, Bambam, Jackson, and Youngjae will remain as a group.

When asked what his thoughts were after leaving the big agency, Jay B shared that the idea of not continuing his career with JYPE suddenly came to his mind. He also asked himself whether he was taking all the benefits he is getting from the company for granted. He added that he wondered what kind of process the agency does before the scheduled activities are revealed and given to him.

GOT7's main vocalist further stated, "I wanted to be directly involved in the work process. I thought I had to know the steps one by one, how hard it was, and how each song and album was released. I want to be humble and start from the bottom again. Of course, I took a lot of courage."

GOT7 Jay B further stated that he was afraid that the gap between the level of his knowledge and his high position as the leader would be too big once he leaves JYP Entertainment.

"But if is stay at the company, the difference would have widened more and more. My real self is here, so I thought of facing it and heading on a little faster," he remarked.

Jay B also mentioned during the interview what JYPE CEO Jung Wook has told him when GOT7 left the agency. "When we left JYPE, Director Jung Wook said, 'Your role as a leader starts now.' I'm actually realizing it now," he shared.

Formerly called JB, GOT7's leader has changed his stage name to Jay B to mark his new beginnings. Meanwhile, Def. is the shortened term of his producer name "Defsoul" that he created for himself since GOT7's debut. In slang, "def" means amazing and the "soul" was inspired by one of his favorite artists Musiq Soulchild, a stage name of American singer Taalib Johnson.

During the interview with Arena Homme+ magazine, GOT7 Jay B revealed that now that he has become stronger and freer, he plans to show various aspects as GOT7's leader, as a solo artist under the name Jay B, and as a producer under the name Def.

The "Sunrise" singer said that he will present the popular hip-hop R&B as Jay B, and as Def., he will release mixtapes, hold photo exhibitions, and more.
