Documentary Director of Sewol Ferry Tragedy Thanks IU, BTS in Light of Its 7th Year Anniversary

A documentary director of the Sewol Ferry tragedy thanked and praised IU and BTS in light of the seventh year anniversary since the tragedy.

On April 16, 2014, one of South Korea's worst ferry disasters took place. The MV Sewol, which was en route from Incheon to Jeju, capsized and sunk. Out of the 476 passengers and crew on board the ship, 304 died - in which 250 of them were students from Danwon High School.

Director Joo Hyun Sook, who directed a documentary film, "당신의 사월 (Your Sewol)" that covered the Sewol Ferry tragedy, thanked and praised IU and BTS for their contribution to her documentary.

According to Director Joo, she suffered trauma as a witness to the tragedy, having to capture the events on camera. After witnessing the tragedy, she focused on her daily life - shooting and editing the documentary, in an attempt to avoid being engulfed in sadness whenever she would remember what happened.

"I tried to maintain my daily life while editing and shooting. However, there was a lot of feelings accumulated while in the middle of it. So I listened to music a lot," said Director Joo.

Director Joo revealed that she was very thankful to IU and BTS for their songs "Dear Name" and "Spring Day," respectively.

"I listened to 'Dear Name' a lot. At that time, I didn't know about it. But as I was making a documentary about the tragedy, a lot of people recommended the song to me. Although IU never officially said that the song is about the Sewol Ferry tragedy, a lot of people believe it is, and I believe so as well," Director Joo explains.

She adds that she listened to the song on repeat infinitely, "I literally listened to the song on repeat infinitely. On the day 'Dear Name' was introduced to me, I listened to it for over an hour on my way from the studio in the car."

Director Joo wanted to thank IU and reveals that she added her name to the ending credits of the documentary, "I wanted to thank IU for providing comfort in my heart. Unbeknownst to IU, I added her name in the ending credits."

Director Joo also emphasized BTS's name repeatedly, which she was regrettably unable to add in the ending credits as well. "I heard that BTS's 'Spring Day' is a song that reminds people of the Sewol Ferry tragedy a lot. Although the lyrics 'I miss you' is sad, I really liked it and I kept on repeating the song," she adds.

IU's "Dear Name" was released in 2017 as part of her fourth album, "Palette." Whereas BTS's "Spring Day" was released in the same year for their "You Never Walk Alone" album.
