Mozilla Firefox Redesign May No Longer Be A “Browser”

Mozilla's Vice President of Firefox engineering Jonathan Nightingale is calling into question the idea of an Internet browser, as he discusses the redesign.

"Maybe we shouldn't even call it a browser anymore," Nightingale said in a statement on the potential future update, The Examiner reports. "'Browser' is really an antiquated word. People don't really browse all that much anymore."

Mozilla Firefox is considering making some changes and updates to its "browser," in order to meet more modern Web surfers' needs and to compete more effectively with other browsers.

According to TechCrunch.com, Nightingale says that browsers are simply a tool to access web apps, web-based productivity tools, and most importantly social networking sites.

The new project that has been hinted as a guidance to Mozilla FIrefox's redesign is called Australis. The project will soon be available through new and updated Firefox release channels.

Nightingale said the team may hold the redesign and updates away from the stable channel a bit longer to ensure that everything works smoothly, TechCrunch reports.

In a design slightly reminiscent of Google Chrome, the new Firefox design, if mirroring Australis, would have tabs with rounded corners for easier user access, and an icon near the upper search box that will allow customized settings and searches, according to The Examiner.
