Video of GOT7 Jackson Telling a Fan He's Chinese Resurfaces + Draws Massive Backlash

In a video uploaded to the YouTube channel "hh" in Aug. 2019, GOT7 member Jackson is seen responding to a Korean fan telling him "Hello" in Korean. People were surprised when Jackson, who is fluent in Korean, replied to the fan in English, saying, "I am Chinese. Okay?"

Jackson, who debuted in South Korea as a member of GOT7 and has been active in the South Korean industry, responded to fans by stressing that he is Chinese in English even though he was greeted in Korean.

The video is speculated to have been taking in Europe while GOT7 was embarking on their world tour, "GOT7 2019 WORLD TOUR KEEP SPINNING."

Jackson debuted with GOT7 under JYP Entertainment in 2014 and has been actively working as a K-pop idol for many years. Because of this, his reply to the fan sparked outrage with Korean netizens. "Why are you making money in Korea even if you are active now in China?" said one netizen who was enraged by Jackson's actions.

Jackson, who is said to have been born to Chinese parents and raised in Hong Kong, was in hot waters back in 2019 for his nationalistic nature. In 2019, Jackson shared a post by the official CCTV Weibo account, an account which is managed by the Chinese communist party.

In the post, he expressed his support for the "One China" movement, which claims Hong Kong and Taiwan as part of China instead of independent regions.

In Mar. 2021, Jackson also cut ties with Adidas, a brand he had been working with since 2018. The reason why Jackson is no longer representing is Adidas is because the brand has publicly stated that they are against the harvesting of cotton in Xinjiang.

Recently, speculations arose that the government was allowing forced labor in the Uyghur Autonomous Region in Xinjiang, Western China.

Following Adidas' announcement, Jackson's self-established label, Team Wang, announced that they would not be continuing with their partnership. They added that the national interest is their top priority, and they will not stand with any slander and defamation against China.

GOT7 Jackson's Recent Activities

Jackson, along with the other GOT7 members, left JYP Entertainment on Jan. 19, 2021, after their exclusive contracts expired. He has since pursued solo activities through his label Team Wang, which helps with his international promotions.

On Jan. 22, 2021, it was confirmed that Team Wang partnered with Sublime Artist Agency for his activities in South Korea. Sublime Artist Agency is also home to fellow GOT7 member Youngjae.

In 2021, Jackson released the singles "Alone" and "LMLY."
