Bernadette Hernandez, Mother of Bruno Mars, Dies of Aneurysm In Hawaii

Bernedette Hernandez, the mother of grammy award winning singer Bruno Mars, died Saturday of a brain aneurysm in a Honolulu, Hawaii, hospital Saturday according to a publicist for Mars' label, Atlantic Records. Hernandez was 55.

Mars' mother, Hernandez, was a hula dancer and a singer who emigrated from the Philippines, nurtured her son's interest in music at an early age.

one of six children, including his four sisters who are currently in a girl group, and a brother who serves as the drummer for the Grammy winner's band.

Mars was born Peter Gene Hernandez in Hawaii and was merely four when he began performing in his family's show as an Elvis impersonator.

As a young adult Mars moved to Los Angeles to write and produce for others, but the last three years have been his most successful.

His debut album for Atlantic Records, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans," included the single "Just the Way You Are," for which he won a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance in 2010.

Shortly after the album and his hit single "Grenade" was nominated for three Grammys in 2011.

His second album, "Unorthodox Jukebox," included hits such as "Locked Out of Heaven" and "When I Was Your Man."

Mars, who has been on tour, is set to resume performances on June 22, but it is not immediately clear whether the schedule will be affected by his mother's death.
