Red Velvet Wendy is the First Female Artist to Represent South Korea in Spotify's "EQUAL" Campaign

Spotify, the world's largest music streaming platform, announced on April 30 KST that it will be launching a campaign for gender equality in the music indsutry called "EQUAL."

According to Spotify, the "EQUAL" campaign is a campaign that aims to expand and support the voices of female artists and music creators all around the world. In addition, the "EQUAL" campaign introduces a playlist, "EQUAL Global," which includes and introduces carefully selected female artists from around the world.

The "EQUAL" playlists will be launched in each country, and will feature 50 of the country's domestic female artists from various genres through monthly updates. Spotify will also be launching "EQUAL Global," which features 70 female artists from all around the world.

"EQUAL" features female artists such as Saweetie, Griff, G.E.M, Nadine Lustre and more.

In South Korea, Red Velvet's Wendy, who recently made her debut as a solo artist, joined the campaign as the first Korean female artist to represent the country in the campaign.

Regarding the campaign, Wendy said, "I think it is meaningful to be able to participate in the campaign. I hope that everyone will work together so that the diverse voices of artists in the music industry around the world can go higher and further."

According to the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative cited by Spotify, the proportion of female artists in the Billboard Hot 100 year-end charts from 2012 to 2020 was only 21.6 percent, while the rest were males.

Spotify emphasized that the "EQUAL" campaign is part of a continuous effort to create an equal music industry by elminiating discrimination in terms of gender, language, race and nationality.

In other news, Wendy made her debut as a solo artist with her debut album, "LIKE WATER" on April 5 KST.

Her debut album consists of five tracks: "When This Rain Stops," "Like Water," "Why Can't You Love Me?," "The Road" and "Best Friend," which features fellow Red Velvet member, Seulgi!
