Chris Beck, Transgender Navy SEAL Using Twitter To Raise Transgender Issue Awareness, Talks About Struggles In Memoir

From Chris Beck to Kristin Beck, the former Navy SEAL officer is raising awareness on the transgender issue with Twitter and her new memoir, "Warrior Princess: A U.S. Navy SEAL's Journey to Coming out Transgender."

In March, Beck opened a Twitter account and began spreading the word about her projects and the issue as a whole.

The 46-year-old began transitioning after retiring as a petty officer for the Navy in early 2011, reports ABC News.

"For years Chris had turned off his sexuality like a light switch and lived as a warrior, consumed with the battle living basically asexual," says the book.

"For Chris the other SEALs were brothers and in the man's man warrior lifestyle, even if he had wanted to entertain sexual thoughts, there really was never any time to be thinking too much about sexuality."

In a 2011 survey by the National Gay and Lesbian Taskforce, roughly 20 percent of all transgender Americans serve in the military.

"They're acknowledging that transgender people exist and not completely off their rockers," mused Autumn Sandeen, a veteran who recently got the Navy to change her gender in her permanent records.

"I feel like we should be able to serve openly because we are physically able to serve openly. It's not a disorder."

Currently, while gays and lesbians can serve openly thanks to the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, transgendered individuals are still not privileged to that right.

But Beck seems hopeful.

Beck is preparing for sexual reassignment surgery with regular hormone therapy.

"You don't have to be a SEAL to be a hero," tweeted Beck today.

"We all become heroes in our own backyards by treating everyone with dignity and compassion."
