'Girls Planet 999' Contestant and Former JYP Trainee Sakamoto Mashiro Confesses She Envies ITZY

In the "Girls Planet 999" Episode 1, Sakamoto Mashiro, one of the Japanese trainees, admitted that she feels envious of ITZY.

On Aug. 6, Mnet's new girl group survival show "Girls Planet 999" aired its first episode. It featured the performances of the 99 girls as solo, duos, or groups.

Among them is Sakamoto Mashiro, who performed (G)I-DLE's "DUMDi DUMDi" with Hiyajo Nagomi.

During an interview, Mashiro shared what it felt like to see ITZY debut while she goes through hard times to make it in the industry.

Former JYP Trainee and "Girls Planet 999" Contestant Sakamoto Mashiro Says She is Envious of ITZY

When she was 16-years-old, Sakamoto Mashiro flew to South Korea to pursue her dream of becoming a K-pop idol. She competed in JYP Entertainment's 12th audition show, where she impressed everyone and captivated them with her adorable visuals and great talent.

Mashiro managed to finish in second place, earning her a trainee contract with JYP Entertainment.

In the "Girls Planet 999" first episode, Sakamoto Mashiro unveiled that she trained under JYPE for two years, from 2016 to 2018, together with the current members of the company's girl group ITZY.

Not to mention, Mashiro appeared alongside ITZY's Yeji, Chaeryeong, Ryujin, and Yuna on JYP Entertainment's "Stray Kids" survival show back in 2017.

In particular, "Girls Planet 999" contestant Sakamoto Mashiro appeared in the first episode of "Stray Kids," where J.Y. Park had to choose which team, female or male, would debut as the agency's new idol group.

After not being able to debut at that time, Mashiro ended up leaving JYP Entertainment in 2018. "I was thinking if that was it for me," she stated during the interview in "Girls Planet 999." She added that she was thinking of giving up at that time.

The former JYP trainee further stated that she returned to Japan and had part-time jobs as she looks for a new occupation. However, whenever she sees her friends on stage as ITZY members, all that she desires is to debut as an idol, as well.

She went on to say that even though she was thinking of giving up her dream when she left for Japan, her heart didn't agree. The Japanese trainee then concluded that "Girls Planet 999" is her last chance to debut as a K-pop idol.

Now, Sakamoto Mashiro is a trainee under 143 Entertainment. She is currently placed second among the 33 Japanese contestants in Mnet's "Girls Planet 999."
