Vine For Android Just Released, But Twitter’s Video-Sharing App Already Has A Porn Problem

Twitter has released a version of its iOS short video sharing app, Vine, for Android users. Vine is now available for download through the Google Play app store. However, a number of videos containing pornographic content is currently troubling Vine.

Vine is basically a video-sharing application that allows users to record videos lasting about six seconds and create loops out of them. The video can then be shared via Twitter or within the Vine app itself, where other users can leave comments or share them directly to Twitter. The app was even dubbed the "Instagram for Video."

The iOS app for Vine was released 4 months ago and since then, it has become one of the most downloaded mobile applications from the Apple App Store. Vine is now a widely used tool in social media and currently, there are at least 13 million users, including the U.S. President.

But just like any other quickly growing photo or video application in social media, Vine has been encountering problems with porn. Users searching for hashtags such as #porn or #nsfw will yield a cornucopia of six-second video clips from exhibitionists and voyeurs.

But Vine users can help in controlling and censoring these kinds of clips by flagging videos that they think are inappropriate. Once the video receives enough flags, Vine will automatically add a content advisory that the "post may contain sensitive content." Twitter has a process similar to that of Vine to advise their users of photos that may have sensitive, malicious or pornographic content.

The Vine app for Android can be downloaded by users with Android 4.0 or higher mobile operating system.

In addition, the Vine application for Android includes enabling the use of zoom function while shooting a video. Hashtags and ability to shoot video with the front-camera will soon be added to the Android Vine app, as stated by a blog post from Twitter.

Sara Haider from Twitter said, "Of course, this is only the beginning - we have exciting plans for features that could exist only on Android."
