Kang Daniel Requests the Closure of DC Inside Community 'Produce 101 Season 2' for Malicious Comments

Back in 2019, it was announced by former WANNA ONE member Kang Daniel's lawyers that they have submitted an application to the Seoul Central District Court, where they requested for the closure of one of DC Inside's gallery (community) called "Produce 101 Season 2."

According to Kang Daniel's application, there are over a million posts on the gallery, with many of them being libel and containing malicious comments, and reports that the posts are exceeding the boundaries of proper freedom of expression.

Hence, they demanded that the gallery be closed. And if not, Kang Daniel will be paid one million won (around $19,800 USD) per day.

DC Inside later released a statement as a response to the application. According to DC Inside, there is no legal basis to Kang Daniel's request to close down a gallery.

In addition, DC Inside has forum moderators that monitor reports made by users, and takes action within 24-hours, including deleting and suspending posts if they are deemed problematic.

Kang Daniel Loses Lawsuit Requesting the Closure of DC Inside Community

Two years later on October 28, the Seoul Central District Court's Civil Settlement Division has ruled that the defendant (DC Inside) won against the lawsuit filed against them by the plaintiff (Kang Daniel).

According to the court, "The excessive interference with expressions posted on the internet may stifle freedom of expression."

"Even if DC Inside has a duty to properly manage the online posting space, the excessive interference of those posted there for fear of defamation and demanding compensation for damages will inevitably stifle freedom of expression," the court explained.

The court also added that DC Inside receives reports on posts that defame or insult specific celebrities and try to delete them. In Kang Daniel's case, there is no evidence that most of the posts in the gallery are insulting or slandering the singer.

"It is insufficient to conclude that closing the online bulletin board is the only way to prevent infringement on Kang Daniel's privacy, and there is no evidence to verify it either," the court said.

Meanwhile, Kang Daniel is set to star in the upcoming Korean Disney+ drama, "Rookies," alongside Chae Soo Bin. This will also mark Kang Daniel's debut as an actor.
