BTS Brings Korean Influences to the American Music Awards (AMAs) Red Carpet

On November 21, BTS rolled up the American Music Awards (AMAs) red carpet, marking their first American awards show in two years since the COVID-19 pandemic. For the red carpet, all the members of BTS wore pieces from Louis Vuitton's Spring 2022 Menswear collection. The boy band currently represents the luxury brand as their global brand ambassadors.

Though Louis Vuitton is French, BTS's suits paid homage to their Korean culture in a subtle way. Upon closer inspection, BTS's suits at the AMAs red carpet featured a Hanbok-style tie at the waist. This part of the look is a nod to the specific way that ribbons are tied in traditional Korean clothing.

The way Hanbok's tie their knots features long tails, just like how some of the suit jackets BTS were wearing at the AMAs were.

BTS, especially maknae Jungkook, is often credited for the rise of modern Hanbok pieces called Gaeryang Hanbok. In 2019, Jungkook was spotted wearing a modern hanbok from the brand Zijansa. However, before Jungkook started wearing such pieces, the younger generation of Korean was reluctant to wear modern-style Hanbok.

However, after Jungkkook started wearing it, the pieces became hip and on-trend. Moreover, after Jungkook wore the pieces, other celebrities, namely Gong Hyo Jin, Oh Seung Hwan, Park Joo Ho, Jun Hyung Moo, and Jang Do Yeon, were all seen wearing modern Hanbok.
