About MBC Gayo Daejejeon, Previous Awards Ceremony and Its Controversy

The MBC Gayo Daejejeon is one of the year-end music shows held annually in South Korea produced by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC). The event was initially held as a singing competition, starting in 1966, however, MBC stopped giving out awards in 2005 after it was boycotted by lots of artists in 2004.

Because of the boycott, the event (which was originally called "MBC Top 10 Singers Match") was renamed the "MBC Gayo Daejejeon" in 2005.

But before this all happened, MBC gave out different awards such as "Best Popular Singer," "Best Popular Song," "Popular Singer Award/ Top 10 Singer Award" and "New Singer Award." Popular singers including Seo Taiji and Boys, H.O.T. BoA, g.o.d, Big Mama, Fin.K.L, Kangta, Lee Hyori, Rain, Shinhwa and other first-generation idols won at the event.

After being a singing competition and awards ceremony, MBC Gayo Daejejeon became a music festival that features a star-studded lineup of artists including Red Velvet, MAMAMOO, BTS, Girls' Generation, EXO, SHINee, MONSTA X, 2PM, BTOB, and more.

In 2019, the event was accused of using its powers to "take revenge" on BTS for not appearing at the show. But, instead of directing it towards the septet, MBC was allegedly punishing BTS's affiliated groups, TXT and GFRIEND.

At that time, BTS was unable to participate in the MBC Gayo Daejejeon as they have pre-confirmed their appearance at the New Year's Rockin' Eve in New York City, which is set to take place on the same day as the Korean music show.

However, the accusations started after fans noticed that BTS's labelmates TXT and GFRIEND were not listed as attendees. Reports claim that MBC was unhappy about BTS rejecting to perform at the year-end ceremony and decided to ban all affiliated artists because of this.

In response to this, MBC denied the allegations and simply said that the casting of artists is completely at the producing director's discretion.
