IVE Accused of Making Fun of Desi Culture in 'ELEVEN' Behind-the-Scenes Video
On December 11, 2021, IVE uploaded the first behind-the-scenes video for their debut music video, "ELEVEN." A clip of Ahn Yujin, Rei and Jang Wonyoung has been criticized by viewers for allegedly mocking desi culture.
At 9:44, Ahn Yujin is seen putting her hand under Rei's chin, with the latter resting her chin on her palm. After, Ahn Yujin starts moving her hand, and Rei can be seen bopping her head in a similar way to traditional desi dances. The caption at this clip reads, "Dduru dduru ddu." The two are then seen laughing.

After, Rei puts her hand under Jang Wonyoung's chin, and the latter copies her actions. Soon, all three of them — Ahn Yujin, Rei and Jang Wonyoung — are all seen bopping their heads. The caption at this part reads, "Dduru dduru ddu with Wonyoung."
The rolling head movements are similar to a traditional desi dance called "attami." The head movement is seen in several major Indian cultural dances, such as Odissi, Sattriya, Manipuri, Kathak, Mohinniatam, Kuchipudi and Bharata Natyam.

Traditional desi dances are considered studies of culture and art. People who take the time to actually learn the history and the dances highly respect the art and take years to be a professional dancers. These dances are also used to depict Indian mythological gods and are used during times of worship. Therefore, when used in a way that is considered mocking, many people become upset.
The clip has since gone viral on TikTok and Twitter, with many demanding the three idols to apologize for their actions. Many are disappointed over the situation, as it has been less than a month since IVE debuted, and the group is already embroiled in a cultural insensitivity scandal. Additionally, due to the number of K-pop idols who have been under fire for mocking desi culture in the past, many believe IVE should know better.
