While many are excited about the group's official debut, the song's lyrics are garnering divided opinions with internet users on social media. Many criticized the lyrics for being sloppy and anti-feminist. In addition, many expected an empowering girl crush song due to the group's name GOT, which stands for Girls on Top. Instead, however, the song talks about bringing down another girl while fighting for the man they love.

Some of the lyrics that are drawing backlash read, "Who do you think you are looking at? / How dare you go over my head? / You better shut your mouth and stand back / Or else give it a go / Try climbing your way up here / Did he have a crush on you? / When we played like a baby / When we were young / I am sure you flirted some, flirted some, flirted some, quite some bit / Playing with your childhood memories / Is it that fun?"

People criticized the song lyrics for being outdated and highly toxic. Many are disappointed in SM Entertainment for not choosing a better song for their idol group, with people accusing the label of riding on the members' vocals and visuals. Some also wondered how the female idols felt performing a song with such lyrics.

Meanwhile, others claimed the song was too difficult to digest due to the overlapping high notes by the vocalists. People also claimed "Step Back" lacked an addictive melody and sounded like several songs patched together.

Some comments concerning "Step Back" read, "The song is bad, and the lyrics are worse, "The lyrics are cheesy and demeaning to women," "Is this the first joke of the year?" "I wonder what they feel having to sing along with lyrics like that," and "Girls on Top, but the top is nowhere to be seen. They are just bringing down women and fighting over men."
