On February 17, the current career status of Red Velvet Irene was discussed by various Korean media outlets and netters.
In particular, Irene debuted as Red Velvet's leader, main rapper and main visual in 2014 under SM Entertainment. Aside from her idol skills, the "Queendom" singer rose into popularity for her beauty, carrying both "pure" and "cold" image.
With her various charms, Irene had captivated the advertising industry since her debut. The Red Velvet member rose as a "CF Queen," becoming the face of numerous advertising coffee, accessories, food, soju, makeup and even automobile.
As one of the most beautiful female idols, not only domestic companies sent her love calls, but luxury brands including Damiani and Prada opt her to be their model and ambassador.
Having a golden career for six years, Irene's "heyday" and image was suddenly destroyed by a controversy, involving her attitude, also known as the "Gapjil" scandal. It is not the first time Irene was involved in a controversy, but this time, the situation is hard as a 15-year stylist in the industry exposed her in October 2020 of verbally abusing them.
Though fans initially defended her and testimonies of Irene's kind personality poured, the "Bad Boy" singer didn't deny the accusation and later on posted an apology, then suspending her activities.
Current Status of Red Velvet Irene: Can She Still Recover Her 'Tainted' Career?
Following her scandal, brands who fought just to get her as their model and ambassador withdrew one by one. In 2021 to date, Irene has no solo broadcasting or advertising schedule as well.
Her last schedule was traced back to SBS Power FM's "Wendy's Young Street" last year, but it is not even an individual schedule but with other members Seulgi, Joy, and Yeri.
Although Irene returned to her Red Velvet activities after a 10-month self-reflection period and even participated in "Queendom" release promotional activities in August last year, the criticism continues against her as some public resentment has not disappeared.
In January 2022, Red Velvet Irene along with the members attended some schedules including the SMTOWN concert and music awards ceremony. However, even her visual which was once loved faced flak from netters, pointing to her thin appearance and aging lines on her face.
At the time, Irene said on the stage, "We will show you a lot of great activities this year, so please continue to be with us."
On February 18, the media outlet hinted at Red Velvet's comeback in March, together with Irene. In response, focus whether the criticism will continue or not is drawing attention from both K-pop fans and netizens.
