Jennie Shares Thoughts on Difference of BLACKPINK Songs to Other Hip Hop Music
Jennie recently held an interview with popular culture and music magazine Rolling Stone, in which BLACKPINK graces the cover of their upcoming June issue as the first girl group to do so in over two decades.
In her interview, Jennie talks to Rolling Stone about numerous topics, one being BLACKPINK's style of music.
As fans know, BLACKPINK has been releasing new music with a girl crush concept, and often features hip hop elements in their songs.
Sitting down with the magazine, Jennie, who is the main rapper of BLACKPINK, shares her thoughts on the definition of hip hop, and what makes the group's songs different from the usual style of hip hop people listen to from Western artists.
According to Jennie, she thinks that hip hop music isn't necessarily about rapping, as it can mean various things to each person.
"I don't think hip hop is just about rapping. Look at Rihanna, she could make anything hip hop. Hip hop means something different to everyone," Jennie said.

Jennie then gives her own definition of the genre and explains what kind of hip hop BLACKPINK makes, saying, "To me, it's the spirit of cool - vibes, swag, whatever words you can use. I think BLACKPINK's hip hop is something the world hasn't seen before."
Jennie Says BLACKPINK's Hip Hop Music is 'Cool'
Jennie adds that with the members' different backgrounds, they are able to integrate pop music with hip hop elements, and make something really "cool."
"We, four girls in their twenties from different backgrounds, are using Korean and English to weave pop music with a hip hop base. Maybe if the really cool rappers in America, who do 'real hip hop,' look at us, it can seem a little like kids doing things," the "Pretty Savage" rapper said.
She continued, "Our hip hop isn't the rebellious kind, but we are doing something very cool. What hip hop is this? I don't know! It's just cool!"
