BLACKPINK's 'Typa Girl' Earn Mixed Reactions From Fans for 'Pick Me' Lyrics
K-pop groups are no strangers to criticisms. And over the years, many have drawn criticism from netizens due to the allegedly problematic lyrics of some of their songs. More recently, BLACKPINK is once again drawing attention to the lyrics of one of their newest singles.
Back on September 16, BLACKPINK dropped their long-awaited album "BORN PINK," which features a total of eight tracks. In particular, their b-side track entitled "Typa Girl" is currently being discussed among online communities for its lyrics on whether or not it is problematic.
Some netizens who read the English translation of the lyrics of "Typa Girl" are discussing if the song is reflecting a pick me vibe. The term "pick me" is derogatory term usually associated with women who claim or act as if they are unlike other women, and most of the time in order to gain the attention of men.
In fact, the term has been popping up more often in the K-pop scene these days, as more songs are being deemed a pick me song by netizens.
In BLACKPINK's case, netizens feel that the lyrics of "Typa Girl" are questionable, such as the lines, "I bring money to the table / Not your dinner / Both my body and my bank account / Good figure / Thinking about me, but there is nothing to consider / If I let you in my circle, you a winner."

Other lines that they feel has a pick me vibe are "I am not like these other girls at all / I am the typa girl that make you forget that you got a type / Type that make you love me when the only thing you done is like."
As a result, netizens expressed their distate for the message "Typa Girl" is sending others, as well as their other songs that are about bragging their success and "being better" than others, which they found to be a formula BLACKPINK usually has with the songs that they have released so far.
BLINKs Defend BLACKPINK's Lyrics
While many are criticizing the lyrics, many have also come to the group's defense. Some stated that the issue is being taken too seriously, and that the lyrics of "Typa Girl" aren't that problematic.
While others also reminded that K-pop idols don't usually have a say or input in writing the lyrics for some of their songs. And that Bekuh Boom is the lyricist behind "Typa Girl," who is also behind some of the other questionable lyrics released by YG Entertainment artists.
