BLACKPINK's 'Shut Down' Banned From KBS Broadcast — Here's Why

BLACKPINK's title song "Shut Down" from their latest studio album "BORN PINK" has been banned from being broadcasted on KBS.

Keep on reading to know why.

BLACKPINK's 'Shut Down' and 'Tally' Deemed Inappropriate for KBS Broadcast

Back on September 16, BLACKPINK made their long-awaited comeback with the release of their second studio album "BORN PINK," which features a total of eight songs, including their title track "Shut Down." As part of their comeback, their new songs would be promoted on different music shows.

However, on September 21, KBS announced the content qualification results for the songs of their new album. In particular, BLACKPINK's new title track was deemed unfit for broadcast on KBS after failing to meet the broadcast criteria.

According to KBS, "Shut Down" was unfit for broadcast after it failed to follow Article 46 of South Korea's Broadcasting Review Regulations. Specifically, it is about the mentioning of brand names or a specific product in the lyrics.

In the case of "Shut Down," it mentions the luxury car brand Lamborghini twice in its lyrics.

Aside from "Shut Down," another one of their songs also did not pass KBS' broadcast criteria. According to the broadcasting station, "Tally," which is a b-side track in "BORN PINK," was deemed unfit for having slang and vulgar expressions in its lyrics.

BLACKPINK initially submitted a total of seven songs from their album to go under deliberation. In addition to "Shut Down" and "Tally," they also submitted "Typa Girl," "Yeah Yeah Yeah," "Hard to Love," "The Happiest Girl," and "Ready For Love."

Their pre-release track "Pink Venom," which is also part of the album and was submitted for deliberation in the previous month, was also deemed unfit for broadcast by KBS.

Just like "Shut Down," "Pink Venom" violated Article 46 of the Broadcasting Review Regulations, after its lyrics included a brand name or specific product. This means three of the eight songs in their album are banned from KBS.

In addition, their song "Hard to Love" nearly failed the deliberation as the lyrics also contained vulgar expressions. However, KBS decided to require BLACKPINK to censor the vulgar expressions instead.

In other news, the music video for "Shut Down" has surpassed 100 million on Youtube on September 21 at around 5:10pm KST, only five days following the music video's release on September 16.

This marks BLACKPINK's 12th music video to hit the milestone, following "BOOMBAYAH," "Whistle," "Stay," "Playing With Fire," "As If It's Your Last," "DDU-DU DDU-DU," "Kill This Love," "Ice Cream," "How You Like That," "Lovesick Girls," and "Pink Venom."
