'Marry Christmas'? SEVENTEEN Mingyu's Recent Post Earns Mixed Reactions

In an online community, a photo posted by SEVENTEEN Mingyu on Christmas had people both laughing and scratching their heads for his misspelled term to the photo of a luxury gift.

The idol earlier flaunted a photo of his gift from a global brand on his Instagram. But over the luxurious present, what caught people's attention was his text: "Marry Christmas."

Obviously, Mingyu meant writing "Merry," but he misspelled it and wrote "Marry" instead.

As soon as the idol updated his IG story, it immediately circulated on various online communities. People cracked up at his small mistake, but some raised their concerns about the idol's English proficiency.

  • "I'm shocked."
  • "Please stop using SNS."
  • "I think it will be harder to find a smart idol."

Some also mocked the "HOT" singer for being a global idol who doesn't know basic English.

  • "Don't start with me saying it's a 'typo.' (Letters) A and E are not even close to each other."
  • "If you don't know, you can just look it up."
  • "If you're a member of an influential group, shouldn't you learn at least the basic spelling."
  • "Just say it in Korean."

Nevertheless, CARATs defended Mingyu, emphasizing that the criticism is absurd since English is not even his native language in the first place.

They went on by stating that most of the people criticizing the idol are not even close to his English skills.

  • "A lot of Korean can't speak English. So why is it funny that they were pointing out (Mingyu's) spelling of 'Merry Christmas."
  • "Marry and Merry is really confusing, though."
  • "I thought there was something wrong. One word was misspelled and they ridiculed it. I guess people here don't know who has more problems."

In fact, even foreign fans who saw Mingyu's post didn't think much about it and dismissed it as funny and cute, and that that is not a big deal.
