Super Junior Heechul Was Once Criticized For 'Not' Donating Money – But Here's the Truth
On February 5, the story of Super Junior Heechul's suffering from offensive words after allegedly not making donations to charity became a hot topic in various web communities.
In the post, Heechul's past anecdote from JTBC's "Love of 7.7 Billion" broadcast in March 2020 caught people's attention after he revealed that he was once cussed out by malicious commenters for not donating money for forest fire damage in Gangwon-do in 2019.
However, at the time, the idol was among the first Korean celebrities who donated money and support for those who were affected - in secret.
Heechul explained:
"I donated last year during the forest fires in Gangwon-do. I don't like being praised in public by everyone, so I decided to keep it private. However, I got a call from the company asking me to disclose the donation I made. Apparently, I was getting cussed out a lot online in the comments for not making donations amid the news of other celebrities' giving to charities."
With the criticism he's earning, Heechul was unfortunately forced to make the announcement, saying:
"In the end, I revealed the donation because of malicious comments."
Super Junior Heechul Exposes Witch-Hunt Happening in Korean Industry Regarding Donations
In the post then, the author pointed out how Heechul implied the toxic reality created when celebrities started publicizing the donations they give.
"At one point, donation and showing good deeds became a wits game. It seems that there is a controversy over donations because of malicious comments."
He also exposed that if a celebrity makes a donation a little late or gives money lesser than what people expected them to give, they become a target of witch-hunt.
Heechul pointed out the battle of donations that sparked based on the amount he gave, narrating that he was questioned and mocked by haters for only giving 30 million won (about 24k USD). The idol received sarcastic comments such as:
- "You should have given 50 million won."
- "How much money did you earn to only give such an amount."
- "IU even gave 100 million won."
After the post in online communities spread, people agreed with the sad truth regarding celebrities' donations and spoke not only for Heechul but for celebrities who suffered the same criticism, saying:
- "There are people cursing idols for not donating?"
- "They might have paid 5,000 won if they like, you don't have the right to dictate to them how much should they donate."
- "Ugly people don't know how hard it is to earn every penny they have."
- "Why do you curse him?"
- "This must be too hard for celebrities."
