NewJeans Secures Artist of the Year in 2023 MAMA Awards, Becomes 1st Female Group to Do So Since Girls' Generation
On November 29, the 2023 MAMA Awards concluded on its second day. The event consisted of new celebrities and artists from the K-pop industry.
The second day was hosted by acclaimed actor Park Bo Gum, who was accompanied by a star-studded lineup containing groups from the third and fourth generations.
It included (G)I-DLE, ATEEZ, BOYNEXTDOOR, EL7Z UP, LE SSERAFIM, NiziU, RIIZE, SEVENTEEN, TREASURE, and ZEROBASEONE.

While Day 1 released only one daesang, most of the grand prizes were awarded during Day 2. The lineup contained four categories, which are Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Worldwide Icon of the Year.
In the second chapter, NewJeans claimed two awards for the night, snagging the awards for Song of the Year with "Ditto," together with Artist of the Year. Achieving two daesangs is already impressive itself. However, there's more to NewJeans' accomplishment.

The quintet also became the first-ever K-pop girl group to win Artist of the Year since Girls' Generation in 2011. Meanwhile, in 2010, 2NE1 took the trophy for AOTY home.
When Girls' Generation won the award in 2011, the AOTY category was only won by K-pop boy groups since then. After 12 years, the award was finally claimed by NewJeans, one of fourth-gen's leading girl groups.

In other news, SEVENTEEN received the Album of the Year award in the second day. They also received the awards for Culture & Style, Best Male Group, and Best Dance Performance Male Group for "Super."
In a separate category, BTS received award for Worldwide Icon of the Year. NewJeans also received the Best Dance Performance Female Group for "Ditto."
