2023 MAMA Awards Flopped? K-pop Stans Discuss Award Show's Relevance, Impact, More
The MAMA Awards is one of the major music awards shows in Korea. Since 1999, the ceremony has become highly anticipated due to everyone's favorite artists receiving their trophies, accompanied by exciting performances and their precious interactions with fans.
Throughout K-pop's generations, the MAMA Awards has consistently become a hot topic and has been the subject of discussion on social media. From the artists who received their awards to the special stages that enticed the audience, the annual ceremony is set to make buzz every year.
However, on November 29, netizens gathered in a forum where they discussed the 2023 MAMA Awards. According to the original author, the live broadcast for the awards show only had 40k viewers worldwide and claimed that the artist lineup was "bad."
"They only had 40K viewers across the entire world watching lol. The lineup was indeed bad," OP stated.
The post was followed by comments from fellow netizens, saying that many were unaware of the awards show. Some added that MAMA could've amplified their views with a BTS member, while others stated that there wasn't anyone who stood out in the lineup.
Read their comments below:
- "I didn't even know that MAMA happened."
- "They could've boosted their views to at least 10 million with one BTS member alone."
- "This shows that BTS not attending really does create a huge gap."
- "Meanwhile, back when BTS appeared during the third gen, they were drawing 700k to 800k views. It was a legendary time."
- "It's because there wasn't a single star."
On a different platform, international fans expressed their take on the matter. They pointed out several factors which led to "flopping" such as lack of stage presence, interesting collaborations, and unfair distribution of performance time.
- "Honestly, award shows in general began flopping when idols started to perform like they were at a weekly music show, with a dance break and remix as add-ons."
- "Award shows used to be fun since there were special stages, fun collabs, when idols actually sang live and brought something new to their performance."
- "It flopped because they gave chart-topping GGs (G)I-DLE and LE SSERAFIM five minutes to perform one song but let boy groups like TREASURE perform two or more songs."
One fan also stated that Mnet has burned too many bridges with companies that can benefit quality into its shows and make "interesting" lineups.
"Mnet has burned too many bridges with too many companies to be able to constantly deliver good shows and lineups."
"I think they also underestimate the pull third-gen groups have with viewers. They should've tried harder to get them to attend or at least perform on the stage."
