SM Entertainment Draws Flak For Cutting NCT Haechan's Hiatus Short

Just two days ago, SM Entertainment announced that NCT member Haechan would be taking a hiatus due to health reasons. However, the idol has already been spotted participating in group activities. Keep on reading for all the details.

SM Entertainment Announces NCT Haechan's Hiatus

Back on January 10, 2024, SM Entertainment announced Haechan would be taking a hiatus due to health reasons.

They stated that the idol was suffering from tonsilitis. To give him ample time to recover, he will be taking a break from all promotional activities. The agency stressed that he would be taking all the time he needs to recover and heal, and decisions concerning his future activities will be based on his health.

SM Entertaimment's statement reads,

"On January 8, Haechan returned to Korea from Japan because he was suffering from flu-like symptoms, body aches, and a fever. After visiting the hospital, it was revealed he had a severe case of tonsillitis and that he needs ample time to rest. Haechan will be taking a break from activities to fully recover and heal. Decisions concerning his future activities will be made according to his health conditions."

This is not the first time Haechan has had to sit out of activities. In January 2023, Haechan was put on hiatus due to heart palpitations, discomfort, and more. As one of NCT's busiest members—as he is part of both NCTT 127 and NCT Dream—he is among the ones overworked.

Therefore, when it was announced that he would be taking a hiatus to prioritize his health, many were saddened but hoped for his speedy recovery. However, just two days later, Haechan was already out and about with his members.

SM Entertainment Garners Backlash for 'Forcing' NCT Haechan Out of Hiatus

After it was announced that Haechan had tonsillitis, many believed he would be on hiatus for up to two to three weeks. In messages he sent on Bubble on January 7, Haechan revealed he was suffering from a 39-degree fever.

On January 9, Haechan said he was feeling slightly better, revealing that at one point he couldn't even swallow water due to how painful his throat was. However, his messages stated he was still in the process of recovery and was catching up on sleep and drinking lots of water.

However, on January 11, NCT member Haechan was seen with the rest of the NCT 127 at the airport. The group is heading to Jakarta, Indonesia, for their concert. While in the airport, his members are seen repeatedly checking up on him, showing that he is still sick.

While it may have been Haechan's choice to return to activities, SM Entertainment earned backlash for allowing the idol to return despite his health problems. Originally, people needed to wait a week for tonsillitis to recover, and since he needs to sing for his concert, he runs the risk of ruining his condition.

Some comments read,

  • "This company needs to burn."
  • "Haechan didn't even get a whole week to rest and recover from severe tonsillitis."
  • "Wasn't he meant to be resting? And now they got him on a flight to perform a concert?"
