NewJeans Minji's English Skills Criticized

On February 6, a post, titled, "Okay, but Minji's English is...", was posted to a popular South Korean online community forum.

The author pointed out that the female idol often makes grammatical errors when she speaks English. Because of that, people wonder why she keeps speaking English even if she is often wrong.

They even speculated whether the company was forcing her to speak English or if she was envious of overseas Koreans.

The poster also shared an instance in which Minji spoke English and made several grammatical errors.

Instead of saying people were staring, she said "starting to looking." She also said "headphone" instead of "headphones."

The post quickly went viral, with over 117,000 views as of this writing. Many took to the comments section to share their thoughts of the idol's English skills.

Some agreed that her skills were cringe-worthy, while others believed that Minji spoke English to look cool. People also wondered if she was jealous of her members or those who spoke English well.

Meanwhile, many hoped she stops and learns proper English before trying to speak the language.

However, Bunnies defended the idol. They stated that constantly speaking English would help her learn the language. They hoped she continues to learn by asking her company and English-speaking members for help.

Plenty of her fans also stated that though she makes mistakes, she is still understandable, so there is no issue.

Some comments read:

  • "I always skip the video if there is a part where Minji is speaking English."
  • "I'll be real: it feels like Minji is forcing herself to speak English. It sounds unnatural, and it's kind of cringe-worthy."
  • "It's like she's speaking English to look cool."
  • "I think consistently speaking English will help Minji improve her skills. I hope she receives feedback from her foreign members and the company helps her learn properly."
  • "People can still understand her anyway, just like how we understand foreigners when they speak broken Korean."
