An outlet pointed out the "disappointing" performance of TWICE in South Korea, and explained what the group is "lacking" by comparing them to BTS Jungkook.
On February 28, the Korean newspaper TenAsia compared TWICE to BTS Jungkook's performance, especially in South Korea.
Contrary to their title "3rd-gen Nation's Girl Group," TWICE's latest album is showing poor results in the Korean music charts. With this, the media discussed what it was lacking by using BTS Jungkook's "formula of success" as an example.
TWICE's 'With YOU-th' Earns Poor Reaction from South Korea Music Charts
Earlier on February 23, TWICE unveiled their 13th mini-album, "With YOU-th," along with its title track "ONE SPARK."
Since release, it has been showing off its potential in international charts, topping the iTunes To Album Charts in 23 countries around the world.
It has been about a week since it was released, but both the album and song are still showing lacking performance in the Korean charts.
Contrary to other fourth-gen and fifth-gen artists, the girl group, which is considered an A-class girl group, can't be found in the Top 100 of the MelOn Chart. On the Hot 100, it failed to reach even the Top 10.
Clearly, compared to TWICE's performance in the 2010s where the girl group always sat atop all the Korean music charts, this is "disappointing."
K-Media Highlights Reason TWICE Failed to Reign Korean Charts With 'ONE SPARK'
With this, TenAsia claimed that what went wrong with TWICE's new release was their choice of genre that doesn't follow the current "easy-listening" music trend.
The media described the girl group's new song as "complicated." Although the track follows TWICE's usual fast, kitsch and lively music concept, "ONE SPARK" is characterized by a fast and complex drum and bass that is unfamiliar to the general public.
This genre suits the music preference of the Anglo-American music market, but the media implied that they shouldn't ignore the Korean music fans, pointing out that they need a clever strategy to keep track of domestic trends while targeting overseas markets.
The article then referenced Jungkook's success story through its global hit "SEVEN," which catered to both international and local fans' tastes.
It has been about eight months since the song was released, but it remained in the MelOn chart for more than three months and is constantly loved by both Korean and foreign fans.
An industry expert stated the reason for Twice's poor performance in Korea, saying:
"The fatigue caused by glamour. Unlike in the past, more music fans feel tired of the flashy and complicated sounds in 2020s. If you use too many instruments within a set amount of time, both clarity and concentration will decrease.
"Recently, K-pop's music composition is showing a trend of becoming simpler. In a situation where music composition trends have changed, the previous splendor may feel tiring or somewhat old-fashioned to the public."
