Netizens gathered in a post to discuss YG Entertainment's impact this 2024 with its active groups TREASURE and BABYMONSTER. However, many seemed to think the agency had "underperformed" for not prioritizing BLACKPINK's group activities.
On July 16, Korean netizens established a forum titled, "YG Is Ruined?" In the post, the author uploaded a screenshot from a Korean news article disclosing that YG Entertainment had only made 300 million won for its profits in 2024's second quarter.
Furthermore, the headline also mentioned BLACKPINK's group hiatus, as all four members are currently focusing on their solo activities. The OP captioned the headline, "'BLACKPINK's hiatus' YG Entertainment, Q2 operating profit only made 300 million won?"
The author also stressed the importance of BLACKPINK to the company's success.
"BLACKPINK really carried the company," OP shared. "Their market capital is still over 600 billion won, but if their quarterly operating profit is only 300 million won ($217,200 USD), isn't that about the level of a popular local gukbap restaurant?"
In the comments, K-Netz agreed on how much of a major player BLACKPINK was for the company's prominence and profits. Meanwhile, some pointed fingers at YG founder Yang Hyun Suk, whom they blamed for the company's decline.
- "Yang Hyunsuk is the one who ruined everything. Is BaeMon even doing anything anywhere?"
- "To be honest, without BP, the company has nothing."
- "It's not just YG, overall, entertainment companies are all failing."
- "This will likely continue for a while. BaeMon is still a rookie group, and the same goes for TREASURE. AKMU and WINNER are not groups that generate significant profits."
International fans on a separate platform reflected on YG Entertainment's treatment of BLACKPINK. Others were frustrated with the agency to produce more groups rather than focus on its existing roster of artists.
- "They should have returned the profits they made from BLACKPINK and solidified the company. They did nothing other than give them long hiatuses and made them lose their main music producer too."
- "This is what happens when you ignore legacy acts and move on to the next shiny 'group' without managing/prioritizing the groups you have."
One fan also mentioned producer and THEBLACKLABEL founder Teddy Park.
"YG has clearly lost its direction. It probably has to do with Teddy creating his label as they relied too much on him for the 'YG sound' but he's more focused on his own idols now to care about them."
"Now YG is trying to do 'mainstream K-pop' but it was something that they never excelled at and that's why they're struggling."
On X (Twitter), netizens reacted to the reports.
