Solar, the powerhouse vocalist from the acclaimed K-pop group Mamamoo, returned to Singapore on 27 July 2024 for her second solo concert, "Colours," marking her first solo performance since 2018. Known for her dynamic stage presence and exceptional vocal prowess, Solar did not disappoint the "Yongsuns" (as her dedicated fans are known).
The concert began with the vibrant, voguing dance number "Colours," setting an energetic tone for the evening. Solar's "Raw" and "Spit It Out" performances further showcased her commanding stage presence and left the audience in awe. Clad in a stunning white dress, she interacted warmly with the crowd, commenting on the hot Singapore weather with a playful, "But today it's more hot because of me...because of you." Her delightful use of local slang, such as "shiok shiok" and "paiseh," endeared her even more to the audience.
During a sweet serenade of "Mellow," Solar took a moment to sit down, allowing her voice to wash over the crowd with gentle, melodic ease. The concert's "Yellow Segment" was a highlight, featuring songs like "Honey Honey," where her voice was as sweet as the honey jar backdrop behind her. The sassy "Honey Bee" and the powerful "Honey" rounded out this segment, with Solar humorously noting, "I never knew I had so many honey-related songs!"
The "Blue Segment" brought a change of pace with ballads like "Where the Wind Rises," "Only Longing Grows," and "Love Has Gone." Solar's angelic visuals and emotionally charged vocals shone brightly here, providing a no-frills, profoundly moving performance. The audience was treated to a special VCR featuring Solar's renditions of hits like Beyoncé's "Love on Top" and Sia's "Chandelier," which were both impressive and entertaining. Reappearing in a red, glittery, and feathery short dress, Solar captivated the audience with a cabaret-style performance of "Big Booty" for her "Red Segment," complete with seductive dance moves and a lighthearted mood. The rock-infused "Blues" followed, with Solar effortlessly hitting high notes amidst strong guitar riffs, much to the delight of her chanting fans.
As the night progressed, Solar donned luxurious red robes for a musical number medley that included "C'est La Vie," "The Girl I Used to Be," and "One Last Time," showcasing her versatility and theatrical flair. She also took a poignant moment to offer advice to her younger fans, singing "Easy Peasy" as a comforting reminder that light follows dark times.
The concert wouldn't have been complete without a nod to Mamamoo, with Solar performing "Star Wind Flower Sun" and "Hello." The latter had everyone singing along, creating a beautiful harmony between Solar and her fans. The main set concluded with the high-energy "Empty" and "But I," with the entire venue jumping and waving light sticks in unison.
A touching VCR made by Singaporean fans played, featuring clips of Solar's illustrious career and heartfelt messages. Solar was then surprised with a cake and a photo session, as fans sang "I love you too" while awaiting the encore. The encore was a delightful mix of intimacy and excitement, with Solar giving out sweets during "Happy People" and hyping up the crowd with "It's Been a Long Time" and "Paradise."
One of the evening's surprises was Solar's own cover of Hozier's "Take Me to Church" and Sam Smith's "Unholy," showcasing her incredible range and emotional depth. Her clear vocals resonated through the regal walls of Capitol Theatre, their elegance only amplifying her confident performance as she sang without accompanying vocals. The grandeur of the venue, with its intricate designs and majestic ambiance, provided the perfect backdrop for her stunning, unaccompanied voice. She also performed "Please Listen to This in the Evening," a song she wrote and shared on her YouTube channel, Solarsido, adding a personal touch to the evening. Fans were further delighted with renditions of "Part of Your World" from Disney and Singapore's National Day Parade classic, "Home."
The concert ended on a high note with "Colour," leaving fans with a lasting impression of Solar's vibrant artistry. Solar's performance in Singapore was not just a concert but a heartfelt, colorful journey that highlighted her growth as an all-around artist. Her connection with the audience, remarkable vocal performance, and genuine charisma made "Colours" a night to remember.
