Squid Game's director and showrunner Hwang Dong Hyuk has shared his thoughts on actor Park Sung Hoon's recent NSFW parody controversy.
Park, who plays a transgender woman in the show's latest season, was caught in a lie after claiming he "accidentally" uploaded a pornographic parody of the show's promotional poster to Instagram.
The actor admitted that he'd lied, retracting his claim that it was uploaded without his knowledge, and claimed that he'd meant to send it to a manager instead.
Hwang expressed confusion and disgust at the actor's actions in an interview with Xport News.
"As far as I know, something like that came out overseas in Season 1. In the past, that happened whenever a famous work came out, right? It's unpleasant. It's a story that completely destroys the meaning of the work itself," he said.
"I haven't talked to Sung Hoon about that issue. I think someone sent it to him, but I haven't heard how he ended up uploading it. Actually, I want to know too. Why did he make such a mistake?"
The post, which was uploaded on December 30, was quickly taken down.
"It seems that Park Sung-hoon accidentally pressed the wrong button while checking the many DMs he received, and it ended up on his story," said the agency in an initial statement.
"The actor himself was very surprised and is reflecting on it. We will work hard to make sure something like this never happens again."
