'Reply 1997' Fans Share Concerns About Upcoming Sequel

Last year's coming-of-age drama Reply 1997 was a big success - and with production of its sequel soon to start, many are wondering if it will fall to the same disappointing fate as many other 'second try' shows.

On Tuesday, July 23 pictures from the first script reading for Reply 1994 were released showing the cast laughing and having a good time. The read-through took place on July 19 at the CJ E&M Center in Seoul. It reportedly took the cast three hours to get through the scripts for the first five episodes.

Reply 1997 had an all-star cast and was full of nostalgic guest appearances and throwback reminders of the early days of K-Pop idols. The new installment takes things back a few years further and the setting has been changed to Seoul rather than the southern city of Busan.

The original 1997 series focused on the emergence of idol groups with H.O.T at the center and incorporated cultural events that happened around the same time. There was also a pretty significant emphasis on the Korean Baseball Organization.

For the revived 1994 edition, Seo Taiji and Boys will be in the forefront and basketball will be the sport of attention.

While many fans of the original drama are eager to see what Reply 1994 has in store, others are a little apprehensive and worry the new version will pale in comparison.

Online fan forums have hosted a variety of conversations since the announcement earlier this year of a sequel in the works.

"This may fail because everyone will compare it to the original and this cast doesn't have half the charm and nostalgic feel that the last cast had," posted one user.

For the most part, the new cast seems to have a fair amount of support despite Reply fans saying how much they yearn for the original actors to return.

That is, all except Go Ara.

For some reason, the young actress has been at the center of criticisms for the new show with fans and antis doubting her ability to perform well in the drama.

But it is not just apprehension about the casting that has fans worried. Now that filming is soon to start, many netizens are bringing up other popular programs which had 'second try' versions that failed.

Examples mentioned in the forums include Dream High 2, IRIS 2 and Full House 2.

"I'm having flashbacks of all the sequels that went down the drain," shared another online user.

Filming for Reply 1994 is said to begin at the end of the month and the new show is set to begin airing in October on Korean cable channel tvN.
