Steven Moffat On Doctor Who 50th Anniversary, 'You Know Nothing About The Doctor': John Barrowman Talks Jack And River Spin-Off

With "Doctor Who" prepping for the 50th Anniversary Special, Steven Moffat has given his reasons on including John Hurt as the new Doctor.

"We've sort of got to the point, especially if you're a fan, you sort of think you've made a list and you've got everything," says Moffat to Crave.

"And you look at it and think okay, you think you know everything about the Doctor? What's his name? Who is he married to? Who were his children? Did he have any other grandchildren? What was his job? You know nothing about the Doctor... So occasionally we have to remind the audience."

Such opinions seems to indicate that the 50th Anniversary will reveal a lot of answers regarding the Doctor.

"He could be lying to you. He is so reticent on information, he hasn't introduced himself in 50 years. So I had that idea [of Hurt's Doctor] kicking around for a while to shock everybody and say this man, who is defined by the secrets he keeps, has got a big one."

And who is better to take on the important role than John Hurt?

"If you're going to introduce a new Doctor from his past, it's got to be a screen legend. Whoever turns around, you've got to go, 'Wow! That's amazing that they're the Doctor!' It can't just be some bloke."

Hopefully, much will be revealed by the time the "Doctor Who" 50th Anniversary rolls around this November.

But another thing that is taking the Internet by storm is John Barrowman's comments on a Captain Jack and River Song spin-off.

"I'd like to see the two of them prior to their lives crossing in some time realm where they actually meet up without the Doctors or anything like that and they are rogue heroes," says Barrowman according to TVaddict.

"Kind of like what 'Star Trek' did in the very beginning, going around and saving civilizations without trying to get too involved, but they always get involved! They always do the wrong thing but for the right reasons and succeed."

In addition to being iconic "Doctor Who" companions of sorts, Jack and River are also rumored to be appearing in the 50th Anniversary in some capacity, though set photos have not confirmed the assertions.

But Barrowman wants to remind "Doctor Who" fans that such ideas are ultimately not decided by the actors.

"It's not up to us. That's the one thing fans need to remember. Like when they ask on Twitter: 'When are you going to do another series of Torchwood? When will you be working with the 11th Doctor?' It's not up to me... It's up to the BBC."

"If they know enough that you want those characters back, they're smart. But it has to be done right and done well. Of course, I'll play Captain Jack at the drop of the hat if I'm asked to. No questions asked. But it's up to [the BBC] to get the show off the ground. It's down to financing and money."
