Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) Release Date Countdown: Game Writer Addresses Gender Discrimination And Violence Issues

As the release date for the most anticipated game in history nears, Grand Theft Auto co-creator Dan Houser addresses some of the major issues that haunted the game: That Grand Theft Auto is sexist and it condones violence.

These issues have pervaded the franchise since its inception, and no less than the game's co-creator Dan Houser, addresses it in an interview with "The Guardian."

On the sexist/gender discrimination issue, that was triggered by the fact that GTA has never had a female lead character in history. In GTA V, there's an unpredented three playable characters, none of which are women :  ""The concept of being masculine was so key to this story. Having three protagonists allows us to create nuanced stories, not a set of archetypes," said Houser.

"Rather than seeming like you've got this super-criminal who can do everything effortlessly, they're all good and bad at different things. We liked the idea of a protagonist retiring with a family, and how awful that would be. We've never done anything like that and you don't really see it in games - to feed into these concepts of parenting and pseudo-parenting."

On the violence issue, Houser cites that Video games in general are easy scapegoats. GTA being at the forefront will naturally subject them to the center of the storm: "Video games are a popular and easy enemy," said Houser in a separate interview with The Times.

"It's all part and parcel of doing something that's not been done before. One of the things that's always been exciting is the feeling of being in at the birth of a new medium, but of course the history of technology-driven art from the printing press onwards has been of people fighting against that stuff."

The explosive release (literally and figuratively) will be on September 17.
