Bob Geldof 'Live Aid' Organizer To Leave Earth Soon (Briefly); 'Boomtown Rats" Frontman To Start Astronaut Training In Two Weeks

While Sandra Bullock's movie "Gravity" has put many viewers on edge, music legend Sir Bob Geldof is simply delighted about prospects of going to that place beyond Earth's atmosphere.  In a recent announcement, the musician is set to go where many can only dream of.

He has been quoted as saying, "Being the 'First Irishman in Space' is not only a fantastic honor but pretty mind-blowing. The First Rock Astronaut Space Rat!"

The 61-year old musician is known for many things, among which include being a member of The Boomtown Rats, as the voice behind "I Don't Like Mondays", and as co-founder of Band-Aid. He is an activist, a philanthropist, a singer, a songwriter, and an actor.  He's done a lot, and wants to do more.

In this venture, he will go onboard the Lynx Mark II privately built spacecraft. The Space Expedition Corporation (SXC) website states:

Earlier today (Sept. 11) Space Expedition Corporation formally confirmed the news that singer, philantropist and Nobel Price(sic) nominee Sir Bob Geldof has secured a seat in one of their upcoming flights, that way officially becoming an astronaut.

Michiel Mol, the founder of SXC, said, "We are so proud to have Mr Geldof aboard. He is an icon of social responsibility and in projects like Live Aid, he proved that entertainment and meaningfulness can be a great combination. We share that vision by offering our astronauts a life changing experience, while in the same time we are changing the concept of sustainable airline transportation all together; namely outside the earth's atmosphere."

The website explains about the program:

The first program is the exclusive Founder Astronaut Program. Only 100 people have the privilege to be part of this program. Founders will make the very first flights into actual space (100 km+), from Spaceport Curaçao. Many have already signed up for the Founder Astronaut Program, including Victoria's Secret model Doutzen Kroes and the world's number one DJ Armin van Buuren.

Tickets for the Founder Program is at $100,000 each and includes other exclusive extras and perks.

The spacecraft, according the website, will have a horizontal take-off, go to power ascent at a maximum speed of mach 2.9 for roughly three minutes, have the engines turned off at 58.5 kilometers above ground to start the parabolic flight, go weighless for five to six minutes at an altitude of approximately 103 kilometers, re-enter Earth's atmosphere, glide and circle while descending, and have a horizontal landing.

Mr. Geldof will commence training on Sept. 26 this year using the space flight simulator in the Netherlands.

He further said, "Who would have thought it possible in my lifetime? I will be joined by a couple of fellow astronauts who will bid to participate in this extraordinary adventure on this amazing night."
