"Suspicious” Fire Ravages New Jersey’s Seaside Heights Boardwalk, A Year After Sandy: 'I Feel Like I Want To Throw Up' Governor Chris Christie Says

A massive fire ravaged New Jersey's Seaside Park and Seaside Heights only a year after the community was severely damaged by Sandy.

The fire that engulfed the iconic Jersey shore boardwalk is considered "suspicious" and is being investigated by the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.

Officials say the circumstances around the fire seem "suspicious," but that they have not yet yet been able to begin investigations because the boardwalk is still smoldering.

The investigation has been turned over to the county prosecutors office.

"Fire of this magnitude with no obvious cause goes to the lead investigative agency in the county, which in this case is the Ocean County Prosecutor's office," one official told press.

Investigators are suspicious of the fire because of the following reasons, according to ABC News:

"It was a midday fire with no bad weather to speak of or obvious cause, there were no injuries, the structure survived the summer season only to burn now and a huge number of firefighters were not around Thursday because the annual New Jersey Firemen's Convention is kicking off today in Atlantic City."

The fire began near a Kohr's Custard Stand at the Funtown Pier on Thursday afternoon. It ravaged the Seaside Park boardwalk, a stretch of boardwalk that had been severely damaged but not destroyed during Hurricane Sandy.

After that, heavy wind pushed the fire into Seaside Heights, about six blocks north. A part of the boardwalk that was reconstructed after being completely destroyed during Hurricane Sandy was burned.

The fire destroyed a length of boardwalk containing about 30 businesses, officials said.

It was directly in front of a rollercoaster that had been picked up by Hurricane Sandy and deposited into the sand, where it remained for months, becoming an iconic image of the storm.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie called the fire an "unthinkable situation" in a press conference. He said everything will be looked at in the investigation and nothing had been ruled out yet.

The public is urged to come forward with any videos or photos they might have shot before or during the fire. They may help investigators to piece the circumstances together. Individuals can call 732-929-2027 with information.
