Facebook Apologizes For Misuse Of Rehtaeh Parson's Photo On Their Site

A thumbnail version of the photo (inset)  of Rehtaeh Parson appeared on one of Facebook's online advertisements, promoting a dating website.

Here is the official statement from Facebook concerning the use of Rehtaeh Parson's photo on one of their advertisements ,"We apologise for any harm this caused."

"This is an extremely unfortunate example of an advertiser scraping an image from the internet and using it in their ad campaign," a spokesperson said.

"This is a gross violation of our ad policies and we have removed the ad and permanently deleted the advertiser's account."

The advertisement appeared using a thumbnail of the fallen cyber bully victim. It read "Find Love in Canada!"

The on-line ad aims to promote a website https://www.ionechat.com. The website involved is no longer available online and the owner could not be reached for their official statement regarding the matter.

Facebook confirmed to have blacklisted the company from their website . The number one social media website expressed its fury after it received reports regarding the incident.

Rehtaeh Parson was a teenager from Canada and an unfortunate victim of cyber bullying. According to Rehtaeh's mother, her daughter was drunk and was raped two years earlier. A photo of the incident went viral online. Anonymous messages via Facebook and SMS were sent to Rehtaeh ; most of which contained harassment and animosity. 

The Canadian teenager committed suicide last April of this year. She took her own life due to the unbearable harassment she continued to receive as a backlash of her unfortunate raping incident two years ago.  She was ravished by four boys  documented by a photo circulated online.

The case is still pending trial. Pornography charges were made against two18-year-old male. Their pleas are expected by 19th of September.

Following the death of the 17-year-old Parson, Novia Scortia's government passed a bill. The bill aims to pursue cyber related crimes such as bullying. It is expected to become a full fledged law before end of 2013.
