Sony PlayStation Vita Review: PS Vita TV Micro-Console Can Make Playstation Obsolete, Fully Functional Media Hub For $100

Sony Playstation Vita reviews have been mainly positive, but the recently announced PS Vita TV has effectively grabbed the spotlight. Days after the Sony PS Vita TV was launched, the new device is already being dubbed a game-changer that could alter the gaming industry and probably make the Playstation obsolete.

If the PS Vita was to be released in the US, it would definitely have a huge impact on the gaming market with its multimedia functionality. Instead of buying a Roku 3 or the Apple TV, you could simply spend $100 and have a fully functional media hub. This would mean Netflix and Youtube, Sony Music & Video plus every game ever released on PSOne and PSP. PC Mag reports that it could actually be such a huge game changer for micro-consoles that it could even take out PS Vita from the equation. This is even more so since the PS Vita did not go up so well against the Nintendo 3DS and there is a 2DS about to be launched that will make the market tough even for the Vita TV.

PC Mag states that the Vita TV is just Sony’s way of trying to make a good situation out of the poor spending they did on bringing the Vita to life. The consumers will definitely love it but Sony may kill its own product (PS Vita) in the process. The fact that the micro-console will allow owners to play all those games they never had a chance to from PS 1 to 4 already bears a magnetic appeal consumers will have a hard time passing up on despite upcoming handhelds from the likes of Nintendo that look promising.

The device that could be plugged into your HDTV has only been confirmed for release in Japan. The processing power of the micro-console will be the very same as that of the Playstation Vita which just got redesigned to come in a slimmer look and a non-OLED LCD screen.

PC Mag stated that the PS Vita TV will retail for $100. If you prefer, you can fork over $150 which will come with an 8GB memory card plus a Dualshock controller. The TV will be able to do the same thing the Playstation Vita does, that is allow users to download and play PSP and PS1 games. In addition to playing downloaded versions, it also comes with a game card slot so that you can also borrow or purchase physical Vita games.

For those who have PS 4, if you have it connected to a different HDTV in the house, you can connect your Sony PS Vita TV to another HDTV and enjoy PS4 games through Remote Play. With its current processing power, size and price point, PC Mag states that the PS Vita TV will be a competitor to reckon with for the Ouya console, Apple TV and Roku which are media hubs. It would be one of the cheapest options in the market for the low-range hardcore gamer.
