Morrissey Says Memoir of The Smiths Will Be Published; Penguin Says Where Is It?

Morrissey claims that Penguin UK will publish his autobiography “within the next few weeks” despite reports that the book had been shelved.

According to a fansite, Morrissey’s missing memoir is due out in weeks. Morrissey said that Penguin will be publishing his memoirs. Morrissey, the former singer of The Smiths put out a series of statements through his True-To-You fansite saying that his memoirs are being published in spite of reports to the contrary.

Morrissey's memoir remains a mystery as the Smiths’ frontman issued a statement claiming that Penguin UK "remain determined to publish within the next few weeks." The news follows on reports that the deal between Morrissey and Penguin, the publisher, had collapsed due to "a last-minute content disagreement".

The True-To-You website, which is run from the United States but is closely linked with Morrissey, said: "The publication of Morrissey's Autobiography remains with Penguin Books. This is a deal for the UK and Europe, but Morrissey has no contract with a publisher for the US or any other territory. As of 13 September, Morrissey and Penguin (UK) remain determined to publish within the next few weeks."

New Musical Express picked up the story and said Penguin confirmed that it was about to publish Morrissey’s memoirs, in spite of the fact that has been no pre-publication publicity material. Penguin hasn’t issued review copies. Morrissey’s memoirs have not been distributed to bookstores. Staff at the U.K.'s largest high street chain, Waterstones, say they have heard nothing about the book.

There is no record that a Morrissey memoir deal has ever been signed with Penguin UK.

Morrissey started talking about his memoirs in 2011. Morrissey told BBC Radio 4's Front Row that he had written a 660-page book. Morrissey explained "I'm really not that interesting, so I don't know why I've written so much." At the time, Morrissey said he hoped his memoirs would be published as a Penguin Classic.

Penguin's Modern Classics was started in 1961. It is reserved for books that have "caused scandal and political change, inspired great films, and broken down barriers, whether social, sexual, or in the case of Ulysses, the boundaries of language itself".

Penguin hasn’t said anything one way or the other.
