New Pokemon For X And Y Will Not Have Mega Evolutions: Overworld Will Not Be In 3D, Capturing Pokemon Now Gain XP

Pokemon X and Y are just around the corner, and a few more updates have surfaced regarding Mega Evolutions, 3D gameplay, and more.

Regarding the 3D visuals, while much of Pokemon X and Y have been overhauled from its traditional 2D art style, not all of the game will in fact be 3D.

"The biggest hurdle was translating the established 2D art style of (longtime Pokémon artist) Ken Sugimori into a 3D world. He has a distinct style of linework and shading that we wanted to faithfully translate into 3D," says X and Y designer Hironobu Yoshida to IGN. "We didn't want to go for a completely realistic style; instead, we wanted to convey the softness and warmth of these designs. I think it helps accentuate the aspects of the Pokémon."

"We chose not to use 3D in areas where we wanted to put more focus on the game's beauty. We also felt that using 3D sparingly would make it have more impact when it did show up."

In talking about Mega Evolutions, director Junichi Masuda tells Polygon the new Kalos Pokedex additions will not receive Mega Evolutions, but only Pokemon from earlier generations.

"Another main theme of Pokemon X and Y is evolution, and I think the concept of evolution is the defining characteristic of [the Pokemon series]. When we were developing X and Y, we were thinking about what new things we could do with this - I talked with the graphic designers and the battle designers to come up with a good idea. What we came up with was a form of evolution that would only last during battle but would also require the Pokemon to hold the Mega Stone."

"We felt that temporarily going to this extreme level and then coming back to normal would be more interesting [that it being constant]. Also, from a gameplay perspective, if we just added another level of permanent evolution, the Pokemon would just become too strong and that would destroy the balance of the gameplay."

In addition, Pokemon X and Y will be the first Pokemon game which gives XP for capturing Pokemon.

With all these major changes, Pokemon X and Y is bound to astound fans when it is released October 12.
