‘Prisoners’ Jake Gyllenhaal Says Detective Loki Is His Biggest Role; Crime Thriller Draws Raves And Award Buzz

"Prisoners" recently opened in theatres after a strong run in the Toronto International Film Festival. Actor Jake Gyllenhaal decalres Detective Loki as his biggest role as raves and Award buzz abound.

Jake Gyllenhaal is already a lead star in films like "Prince of Persia" and "Source Code." Films that can label you a star, but not in the ranks of the elite. Enter "Prisoners," a crime drama/thriller that brings out the best in the actor.

Gyllenhaal plays an ace detective haunted by his only unsolved case, the disappearance of two young girls. One of them is Hugh Jackman's daughter. The moral dilemma is sparked when Jackman decides to take matters into his own hands.

He relates how he got the role in the film in an interview with MTV News. "[Villeneuve] offered me this film saying, 'I know this about you. I know you can do this.' I went, 'I'm going to trust this man and this relationship,' " Gyllenhaal recalled. "And this character is so different from the other. Just because he's a cop doesn't mean anything."

The depth of the material was a daunting big step for Jake, but he believes that his time has come: "At a certain time in your life you start to say, 'Yeah, that moves me. I'm into that.' You trust your instinct," he said. "I think all of those instincts become honed. There are a lot of things I'm not afraid of anymore. There are a lot of things that I continue to be [afraid of] and I'm trying to look at."

Indeed, the movie opened to rave reviews, and Jake Gyllenhaal for Best Supporting Actor started to sound right. The gritty performances and the superb direction, as well as the intriguing moral dilemma make "Prisoners" a must-see movie.

It recently opened in theaters September 20.
